News from Home 1977

Hotel Monterey, News from Home, and D’Est are three films characterized by the use of static shots or tracking shots, without any script, plot, or narrative, in which the images, with a slow rhythm, progress without any apparent purpose. These films, identical in style and composition, differ primarily in location and sound treatment: Hotel Monterey is completely devoid of sound, both diegetic and non-diegetic; News from Home incorporates ambient sound and Akerman’s voice reading letters she received from her mother while in New York; and D’Est features only ambient sounds. Additionally, the limited color palette and lighting contribute to a sense of repetition in the shots.
