The 1st season of Courage starts off exceedingly great. I actually remember every single episode in the season, which says a lot because all the childhood shows I've re-watched so far had a couple of episodes I didn't remember in just about every season. The 1st season is filled to the brim with moments I'd consider to be iconic. King Ramses' "Return the slab...", Bigfoot and Courage dancing like Carmen Miranda, Freaky Fred being "Naaaaughty". I would say that Courage's scream and how his body shifts during his screams come close to being as iconic as Tom's scream from Tom & Jerry. The slapstick humor is still funny to this day in my opinion and is easily the best part so far. The monsters are all memorable and I really enjoy the fact that they aren't always villains, kind of gives it a "Things aren't always what they seem." theme. I'm not a parent but there are definitely some episodes that might be too freaky for some kids but perhaps the humor might keep them in a lighthearted mood throughout.
The best episodes were Demon in the Mattress, a funny Exorcist parody with the funny "Cup of tea" moment. Freaky Fred, the mentally insane barber. The infamous King Ramses episode, most fans considered this to be the scariest episode when they saw this in their childhood days. The sequel to the pilot episode, Revenge of the Chicken From Outer Space. Little Muriel, with her infamous Macaroni and Cheese moment lol. Shockingly I don't think there are any bad episodes at all if I'm being honest, if I had to name a weak episode I would only say the very first one.
What surprised me the most is that this show didn't have an abundance of adult jokes like most 90s shows tend to have, I only noted about 5 adult jokes thrown in here but hey this is only the 1st season. There are 2 episodes though that from certain point of views could be considered to be centered around adult subtext. The Freaky Fred episode because let's be honest his desire to shave hair is practically an uncontrollable fetish, and the Queen of the Black Puddle episode since what it's mostly about is an evil queen apparently trying to hypnotically seduce Eustace.
