10 out of 10 for me brilliant show
The show does an excellent job at showing how the crisis the US faced was really caused.
If I'm honest I never really take a look at medication my doctor prescribes, I just take them because I trust my physicians.
That changes however whenever I am visiting the US, there I always check what a pain-medication does (I have had friends going through rehab and I know I wouldn't survive it having grown up in a cult causing issues giving up control over my own actions)
Living in germany, I am wondering if they really tried to get oxycotin on our market prescription free.
I could have told them that hell would freeze over before that happened. Doctors are very careful prescribing pain-medication here. You have to have a prescription to get anything stronger than ASS 400mg.
still can't believe it's a real story for a company that still selling drugs!
An absolutely superb show. Tense, well written and so well acted. What a show!!
I love Michael Keaton, bravo.
This fascinating miniseries tells the story of the American opioid crisis that began in the '90s with the introduction of the painkiller OxyContin. Thanks to the utter lies told by the pharmaceutical company that manufactured it, it ended up destroying the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
It's a long and complicated story, and the series perhaps makes this unintentionally more complex by continually jumping back and forward in time. Fortunately its edited together well enough to keep things flowing, even if I ended up getting lost a few times in regards to the timeline.
Michael Keaton is fantastic in the role of a small town doctor who is unwittingly caught up in the horrific events that unfold, and Kaitlyn Dever is emerging as an absolute star. Between this and Unbelievable she's been in two of the strongest miniseries of the past few years. Rosario Dawson gets to show her anger in a great role, but the storyline which I found myself most into was the investigation being carried out by two state prosecutors, played by Peter Sarsgaard and John Hoogenakker. While Dever's story was the heart of things, their story was the part that made me want to come back each episode.
The series fumbles in a few places. Most of the attempts to portray the relationships and personal lives of these people fall a bit flat, and end up feeling like uninteresting time filler when I wanted to get back to the investigation.
But the weakest part here is the portrayal of the Sackler family. I know from other things that Michael Stuhlbarg is a good actor, and yet his performance here is bizarre. He's like a moody teenager with communication issues and a silly voice and I was confused by all the choices made. I just couldn't take him seriously. The rest of the family come across similarly cartoonish (although I have to wonder if this was intentional, given how ridiculous these people really are).
Those few downsides aren't enough to stop me recommending this as a must watch miniseries that tackles an important topic. The American health system is sadly very messed up.
This is very accurate, and all too real having dealt with this situation first hand i know how hard it is to get out of that life style and i know so many peo.ple who werent fortunate enough to get out this is a great series very raw
A really solid, impeccably made show, with great acting and a good writing. All the cliches of the "true story" genre are there, but in a good way.
Love this show must watch !
very well written and very good acting Michael Keaton and Kaitlyn Dever are fantastic all around just a great show about a subject that needed some exposure i never knew so many people got addicted to this drug so easily the company and executives who pushed it should pay dearly
Loving this show. Michael Keaton is amazing in this show. DO RECOMMEND
If you want a detailed understanding of exactly what started the opioid crisis, told in an engaging way through excellent acting, writing, and storytelling in a dramatisation, this is for you.
I'd also recommend it to lovers of "police investigation into government/corporate conspiracy" type shows even if you have zero interest in prescription drugs themselves, because this is possibly the biggest real life example of corporate and state collusion in mass deception and corruption in history... that we know of, at least.
I used to be hooked on the nasty shit myself and this show also does an amazing job demonstrating exactly how an ordinary person can become addicted, and even how ordinary well meaning doctors ended up over-prescribing due to all the lies Big Pharma told them, in a very empathetic manner. I really appreciate that detail.
This was a very harrowing watch, as someone who has struggled with substance abuse (and still does) it really rattles my cage seeing the structural pincers at play. Truly an amazing show from start to finish and I must say that Michael Douglas kills his role. Big fan at this point (loving Birdman too).
Awesome show, and it really shows just how much money the pharmaceutical industry makes in order to corrupt politicians going all the way up to the highest levels.
Nice Show. You can feel the pain of the people that its inside de terrorific world of drugs. Good to try to teach the people the risk of be addicted. Very good Michael Keaton. 9 - 10
Superb acting, directing and production on this miniseries. A very adult interesting topic too. Very recommended overall. My woke-meter showed really high levels at times ("diverse" characters for the sake of representation, Rosario Dawson's character), but it was not enough to distract and to make this series anything other than a triumph.
[Disney+] Despite a complex narrative, mixing times and perspectives of different characters affected differently by the opioid crisis, the episodes unfold smoothly. The story is about, mainly, a deeply corrupt society, in which it is easier to buy those responsible for control measures than to adapt to them. And it supports the representation of pharmaceutical companies as the new drug dealers.
First episode pretty good.. second even better...
3-5 - WOW even better... much watch show.
How did Big Pharma allow this show to be made/shown?

For me this is the winner for this year's Golden Globes, a series that was not heard at all, It has not the glamour of squidgame or 100.000.000 people saw it, it is a marvellous diamond.
After the excellent Dr. Death, a corresponding theme series that is simply a masterpiece. You do not know what to praise first, the incredible script, the director tricks with the back and forth and where you are that now we saw this and then takes you even further back to show you how he reached in this part of the story! I do not live in the US so i don't know the actual impact and valid facts only what i've seen from movies/shows about OxyContin but the presentation was amazing.
Special mention to Kaitlyn Dever who since she left that miserable politicised comedy she was playing and after the amazing Unbelievable, she now gives another excellent dramatic performance.
This is a MUST see.
