[6.9/10] Eh, the concepts here are both decent enough, but the execution didn’t do much for me. Johnny and Moira mirroring Roland and Jocelyn’s tiff, only to express their frustrations through the Schitts as surrogates, should work better than it does. It feels like the show’s trying to go for something real there, but can’t quite hit it.
Johnny and Joocelyn find common ground in their complaints about their spouses, whereas Moira and Roland just lash out at one another. Some of the insults in the latter conversation are solid, but otherwise it’s not really clear where the show’s going with this other than suggesting that there’s more common ground between the couples than we might think. That’s a fine, if trite point, but one whose delivery is muddled. Johnny and Moira reuniting and expressing themselves to one another via talking about the Schitts is kind of sweet, but overall the whole thing just feels kind of clumsy.
The Alexis/David apartment-hunting escapade is more straight comedy, which livens things a little bit. David obviously wanting the apartment and not-so-subtly trying to dissuade Alexis from buying it is a solid if repetitive bit, and the same goes for him vocally imitating his sister. Ray is actually the funniest part of this one, with his chipper yet matter-of-fact demeanor bringing the laughs. The Rose siblings needling one another is sturdy, if mild comedy and it works for some nice chuckles throughout. There was something especially amusing about David taunting his sister with the idea that someone probably killed themselves in the Rose kids’ hotel room, in that rude big brother way.
And yet, the funniest part of this episode was the opening two-minutes. The elder Roses having their sleep interrupted by Roland blasting his music next door, only to yell at the kids to turn down their music, only for the kids to yell back that it’s not them, only for the whole thing to turn into one hilarious cacophony of yelling and accusations was a nice single-serving dose of comic escalation. Biggest laugh of the half hour!
Overall, the central Johnny/Moira story wasn’t the show’s best, but the rest of the episode’s material was solid enough.
