religion is such a disease that it even infects beloved, normally rational fictional characters. this might be the XF mode i enjoy the least. GA deserves better material than this hokey bullshit, but what else can be expected from Shiban/Spotnitz, the series' weakest writing duo?
This starts out very slow and turns out to be pretty engrossing. Scully's religious faith is solidified by her encounter with a seraph who is saving the souls of 4 deformed girls. Lots of eerie imagery here, especially the seraph and its 4 faces and the devil's shadow, both of which are seen by Scully.
This doesn't trash Christianity. Scully's faith is one of my favorite things about the series, though not an endorsement. But whenever Mulder expresses his total disbelief in God, it really seems harsh and cold toward Scully. This isn't a gripe, it just makes me support Scully's struggles even more.
Secondary Characters in this episode: none
Another day, another religious episode. Another episode, another opportunity to break the rules of the world you've created. The mightiest of writing sins. So mote it be. Abandon hope of consistent good writing and world building, all ye capable of independent, critical and rational thought.
Yet another outing in which the character of Fox Mulder proves that he's a bona fide hypocrite of the highest order, a terrible FBI agent and the worst of "friends". The writers sure love having Fox talk down to and belittle Scully, don't they? It was tired and unwelcome the first time it happened. The character of Scully, as originally presented, wouldn't have allowed for that. No way.
This typed, Gillian Anderson (again) spreads her wings and is given the space to exercise her acting chops. The last few episodes have been some of the best to date for the actor on this show, showcasing a variety of genres. Shame it's in service to a rudderless inconsistently written and told stories. That typed, the show was popular and helped launch her career... and despite the myriad of issues, can still be entertaining.
This episode was fairly nice, outside of characters behaving out of character, not recognizing the past and the lean into Christianity. Some of the shots are fantastic. The acting is mostly good (let's not talk about the beloved double D) and the conclusion may feel satisfying, even though, like most episodes, there is no conclusion... only yet more questions precariously stacked atop the Mt. Everest of loose ends that will never be resolved.
Lame episode overall, but cool the little things it has in common with Supernatural. (I watched The X-Files start to finish when it first aired, but that was a long time ago and I'm re-watching now and realize just how much I'd actually forgotten over the years.)
Ummmm but "seraphim" is plural. The singular is seraph. That bugged me.
One for those who wonder about the meaning of Life

Gillian's acting is as good as ever, and she does her best with the material she's been given.
Religious mythology and the x files just don't mix well. Not to mention how none of this will ever be followed up or in a substantial, arc like way like the alien and conspiracy stuff does.
If you want deep and substantial religious and supernatural mythology and arcs, watch the show Supernatural.
