Platoon 1986

The first film in Oliver Stone’s anti-Vietnam War trilogy, Platoon presents a gritty, nihilistic vision. The story follows a U.S. Marine Corps. platoon that gets swept up in the fever of war, and proceeds to commit a series of war crimes and frag their fellow soldiers. While Stone claims the film is based on his personal experiences, the characters and situations seem overly exaggerated in order fit the themes of the horrors of war and man’s dual nature; and this ends up hurting the storytelling. With the overt anti-war politics, Platoon plays out as a poorly told allegory.
