For as insanely stress-inducing as this movie is, it's one of the most entertaining and easily rewatchable movies of the last decade with a lot more humor than you'd think, given Mark's "predicament".
"I just had to explain to the President of the United States what a 'bureaucratic felcher' is" might be one of the funniest deliveries of Jeff Daniels' career that wasn't in a comedy; he just delivers it so dryly and sarcastically that it always makes me bark with laughter. I also love Donald Glover pulling his best Abed impression as Rich.
I really do love this movie. And I keep crying happily at the end!
If you watch this, please watch the Extended edition clocking at 2h 30. It really adds depth to the solitude and struggle. And lifts this film to damn near perfect!
What a visually stunning, brilliantly acted and fantastically directed film.
It's a Hollywood movie that shows film-making at its best. Heart, class, excellence.
9.25/10
2020 Rewatch: This film reassures me in the ingenuity of humankind. For now - in this world we live in at this moment in time - the brightest minds of most nations can rise to their potential. If a situation like this faced us, I'd hope the world would still be bright enough to solve it. Just a fantastic film for the modern age.
There are a few glaring plot holes, but considering the lack of decent sci-fi movies out there, it's difficult to nit pick. Matt Damon does a superb job, as always, and the writers did an excellent job of toning down Watney's super annoying narrative/character from the book (which I couldn't even finish reading it was so bad).
Roughly one year ago I watched this movie, and almost a year later and I'm still dragged to tears. This movie tugs on emotion more than the cable tugged on Melissa Lewis when trying to retrieve Mark Watney. As an avid space nerd, this movie takes all the best qualities of space movies, great CGI, amazing acting, and a pleasant emotional trip, and wraps it in a space survival bow tie. I will be watching this movie, yet again, in the future.
Still an amazing movie after a few rewatches. I love the humour, the music, the emotional moments, it's a fun ride from start to finish.
This movie was amazing, now first up I have not read the book, so they may have left lots out and changed a bunch, but I can't comment on that. However the movie was fantastic, sets, acting, writing all well up to par and Matt Damon nailed his role.
Similar to Interstellar in terms of scientific accuracy with physics and space without the "Bookshelf" ending. On that note, you could kind of see Matt Damons character going to to be in the initial interstellar mission and then doing anything to survive haha.
Exceeded my expectations for sure.
Also plot twist, Sean Bean doesn't die!
Oh to state all the things wrong with this movie. Number 1, I love how that dude just made a bomb at the end in like 5 minutes and there was just this sophisticated detonator laying around....
Matt Damon is the only thing good about this movie.
At least mackenzie davis knew her place in this movie. She is not a lead role actress, terminator proved that.
Jeff Daniels has come a long way from
My Favourite Martian
There is not much left to say about this movie except... if you can, watch this movie on 3D is amazing!!!
absolutely worth waiting for, absolute gorgeous acts by the members and great movie as well i really did enjoy it and probably not like other science fiction movies but not like the Interstellar by Mathew that movie is 20/10 but doesn't burn this movie no! this movie on the list!. :)
Loved the film but the god awful disco soundtrack is horrible. I love Bowie but even that was distracting.
I am going to read the book now....does it mention disco ?
Forgot how good a movie this is! It’s gripping, it’s dramatic, it’s sciency, it’s funny. Matt Damon plays the part incredibly well. And Kate Mara is cute.
An excellent movie with a superb cast. One of my favourites of the year. Uplifting and effective. Loved this.
A good old fashioned escape movie dolled up in a fancy sci-fi dress. The story is compelling and the characters are charming. Very enjoyable, if not particularly deep.
One of my most favourite movies, I just loved it. Let’s have move quality films like this please.
Seeing it again after reading the book, it's missing something. Not sure what.Soul? Not really surprising. Still an entertaining sci-fi movie.
This is a gem of a film. It's one of my all-time favorite films, in fact. What I really enjoyed was that there was plausible science behind the decision-making in this film. And, as well-made as this film was, the book is even better!
The Martian is such a fantastic movie, I've watched it 3 times and each time, I'm hooked and invested in the story. That's thanks to the incredible acting from everyone (Matt Damon is brilliant), writing, score and cinematography. Great movie!
3D in this movie was spectacular, really well done.
i like it when i sink into a movie, yes i liked this for sure :)
The trivia on IMDB are a great help for explaining Mars exploration stuff.
The book is truly excellent. Here's hoping Ridley Scott and this fantastic cast do it justice.
I absolutely love that they named one of the plans "Project Elrond" and Sean Bean was there...haha
Ridley Scott, again, delivers. Loved every minute of it. Works pretty good even on watching it for the second time. And that identifies as a very good movie for me.
Although Matt Damon is in essence the movie the whole cast is amazing. You really feel that everyone wanted to be in that movie. It looks credible and there is enough science there to make you buy in. There is a good sense of humor and I like how they made the rescue a bit like the moon landing where the whole world was watching. Something that brought us together.
In short, 141 min of really good entertainment.
A great space movie. Matt Damon is fantastic and really needs to be with all the time he spends alone on screen. It's shot beautifully. The story moves well and is pretty funny.
One of the best space movies ever!
A very nice movie about discovery, hope, physiological endurance and resourcefulness. If you think you will like or actually like the movie go get the book, beforehand or afterwards, you are not likely to be disappointed.
Rewatch impression:
Great cast, stellar performance (gheghe)
I didn't notice the first time that Sebastian Stan was in this. My man, looking good.
First watch before having Traktv 10/10.
Read the book yesterday and watched the movie today down to 8/10.
They changed/ removed couple of important moments from the book, but that's ok limited time available I understand rewriting the story from book.
what's not ok is Mark Watney's video log from mars is waste, until Ares 5 at least, should have kept it as text log( as on book) which could be taken very easily to Hermes due to low size text file.
Kinda long (but not that long considering content), and a tad too dramatic and idiotic (American) to be realistic, but other than that a great movie, at some points it felt like it was based on true events or something. I dont really like sci-fi, but this movie was realistic enough to pass as a regular movie about space. Nice one. Worth another watch, especially since the character Mark Watney is written so funny and down to earth (hehe)
rating: 7.8/10

The first time I watched The Martian was in theaters and I remember absolutely loving it. Coming at it for a rewatch was a little bit depressing, particularly after reading the book. I should have known better.
The movie itself is not bad, not at all. Ridley Scott did a great job with this movie and adapting it to the screen. There were a lot of great elements to the original story that got cut, but it was for a reason. Sometimes it's not easy to adapt the little details to the big screen. It's just not possible without making a 12 hour film.
The movie captured the most hilarious of the funny moments and the worst punchlines of the dad jokes, all while doing justice to the story itself. Matt Damon really brought Mark Watney alive. He did such a great job in this role. Some of the Earth supporting cast were great as well, like Chiwetel Ejiofor as Venkat (Vincent) Kapoor and Donald Glover as Rich Purnell.
I'm keeping my rating of this show from when I first watched it, because my impression of the film has been muddied since reading the original story. All in all this is a pretty good show with some great music, a great cast, and a lot of impressionable moments. It's cheeky and action-packed, while still retaining the gravity of the situation for the serious, emotional moments.
Loved it.
Classical US space movie, 3D quality was good but probably it beacuse of my family doesn't want any subtiles anyway the turkish dubbed version sucks.
All round a good film. Emotional in parts and funny in others. Great cast if characters. Although it didn't astound me I still thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
Matt Damon is left for dead during the rushed evacuation of a small-scale Martian expedition. It's like Apollo 13 on steroids, mixed with short dashes of 127 Hours, MacGyver and Survivorman. Much less of a one-man show than I was expecting, which gives the film a little more spirit but also a more conventional structure. I think it would've been a far more interesting, daring picture if we'd seen more personal video journals from space and less debate around a round table at NASA, if just because we've seen the latter film several times already.
Damon is excellent, bringing a blend of hopeless desperation and punchy good humor that gives him credence as both a technical expert and a likable, relatable everyday guy. The supporting cast is scattered with some strange choices, though - Kristen Wiig in a dead-serious role and Sean Bean as a kind-hearted supervisor are particularly out of place - which left me enjoying the scenes with Damon alone in the red landscape much more than the rescue effort.
Still, the epic moments far outweigh the sub-standard ones, there's a strong sense of humor beneath all the suspense, and the visuals are really pretty incredible. Bonus points for getting so much of the science right, too. I'm conditioned to expect a lot of flaws when I dig deeper into sci-fi like this, but apart from one notable exception (the weather on Mars), the experts looked at this one and said "Yeah, that could actually work." Cool stuff.
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Lived up to all the hype. One of the best films of the year.
Brilliant, I loved every minute, the only criticism, I thought the suspense could have been built a bit bigger, as I always had the feeling all would be well in the end.
A good one-watch movie. Funny, lots of science porn, lots of seat edge. I especially liked Donald Glover's character, although he didn't get enough screen time. Sure, some of it is a bit unrealistic, but overall it's worlds ahead of Interstellar on that front - nothing supernatural happens because it doesn't need to! Damon does a great job - it's easy to put yourself in his shoes (boots?).
I've just rewatched this as I received Andy Weir's book as a Christmas gift so I really had to see this masterpiece of a movie for the second time around (which I must say I've enjoyed even more than the first one).
Let me tell you from the getgo to pick up the novel. It's got all the anwsers to all the question you might have and it's written as a (surprise surprise) personal log by Mark Watney.
Matt Damon does a great job, as does Sir Ridley Scott. Really no objections as to the cinematic endeavour. As for the science, maybe it's far fetched, maybe it's not, others (far more qualified than me) have speculated on the matter so look into it for yourself. Either way, it doesn't bother me and the movie experience is unencumbered by this aspect so I strongly strongly recommend you watch this amazing piece. Enjoy
The movie is way too unrealistic. No one plugs in a USB cable on the first try.
I absolutely loved the movie. The plot holes were almost negligable and as a whole it seemed to be.... realistic! This movie is Cast Away meets Gravity meets McGuyver.
Ridley Scot is back! After some less interesting movies he succeed to make an great one again! It isn't the greatest movie I have ever seen but I couldn't recall one fault or issues with this film. The acting was great especially with his carry Matt Damon! The rest of the cast did fairly good. Matt Damons character stranded on Mars and wants to find a way to survive until he is rescued. This is the main part of the film which was surprisingly funny. Mainly due to the optimistic attitude that Matt Damons character had. It was even funnier than some comedies I have seen this year. Besides that there are some really suspenseful scene with are handled very well by Ridley Scott. He build the suspense fairly slow but great. They also created a great setting of Mars, it really felt like a place which was gorgeously filmed.
Overall I would gave the film a 8,5 but unfortunately Trakt would allow me to give that many hearts so I rated it a 8. Simply because I liked my 9 rated films more than this one. Nevertheless I had a really good time with this entertaining, greatly directed and interesting film.
You have to be kidding me. They've been advertising this movie with Matt Damon all over the posters and trailers and TV spots. He's listed as the top billed actor. People keep talking about him in this and how great he is. I see him promoting this film everywhere.
And then he dies in like the first five minutes. So stupid. I went into this to see why everyone loves him in this movie, but he gets hit by a piece of equipment and dies before I've even taken a bite of popcorn. Maybe, I thought, he isn't quite dead. But then NASA makes a full statement and everything that he died, so it had to be true.
I was so pissed that I just got up and walked out. I'm not dealing with this crap.
Horrible movie. Poor acting and it's too simple and patronizing overall.
Also, what's up with these american movies wanting to always have a scene where people applauds and cheers a rescue they watch on monitors? This movie even has more than one such scene!
If you, like me, believed this was something more special thanks to the hype, trust me and just avoid this.
One of the best movies I've seen in a really long time. The cast was so excellent, the plot was well carried, the science was just untouchable enough for me to believe it, and it was about as pro-space missions as anything I've seen in a while.
The only question I'm left with is if Matt Damon gets stranded every time we send him somewhere, why do we keep sending him out there in the first place?
After a rather big disappointment with Prometheus I was not overly excited about this movie. But boy was I wrong!
It caught my attention immediately and held it in its grip throughout the entire movie. Matt Damon delivers as usual, and the rest of the cast complements with him. This movie is beautiful in both visual and emotional way. An perfect mix of action, humor and science. Could Ridley Scott be back in the game? Maybe.
I know it's unfair to compare the adaptation to the source. But I really didn't like this compared to the book. It felt like it lost it's soul. Also I think the casting was way off across the board.
This wasn't really what I expected. Turns out, "The Martian" wasn't entirely about a man stranded on Mars. Sure, there was a lot of that, but there was almost as much time spent back on Earth with NASA, planning and plotting the rescue of Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon).
This was also quite funny. I'm not a Matt Damon fan, but he was really easy to pull for and there was nice chemistry between him, NASA, and the crew that had accidentally left him stranded on Mars.
It's gotten to the point where a lot of special effects are so good, you just forget about them and lose yourself in the story. "The Martian" was one of those instances. The red planet was incredible.
I did think that the world coming together, pulling for Watney's rescue, was well intended but a bit corny. Maybe that's because I've been reading about the horrors of World War I and the millions of dead that were basically brainwashed into fighting a meaningless war. I've gotten cynical to the point of not believing so many resources would have been brought to saving just one man. Or maybe even more cynical in thinking it shouldn't have been attempted.
Watching what Ridley Scott has created here has made me want to go back and give "Prometheus" another try (almost). And while I was watching, I couldn't help but think how much I preferred "The Martian" over the other most recent near-Earth space adventure, "Gravity".
After reading the book, the movie just seems to be just a fast-forwarded version which leaves out the essence of his struggle to survive. The movie left all that out and everything seemed so easy for him to overcome. Very disappointing.
Matt Damon delivers a charming and funny performance in a survival movie that could've ended up being dark and gritty. Thanks to Drew Goddard's witty and smart script, Ridley Scot's rejuvenated directing, beautiful cinematography and a great supporting cast, utilised to the fullest, The Martian remains hopeful and upbeat, an entertaining triumph of one man beating the odds.
It was OK. Goofy at times, which didn't seem the right tone in my opinion. The constant sountrack was also a mood killer and not a builder. Is this a comedy or drama or what? It seemed unfocused and didn't have any balls to invest in a sytle. Interesting ideas but its also has the typical space blockbuster feel and structure. I couldn't fully get emotionally invested and it felt like the movie wanted you to be. A lot of charafters are just boring, and they rely on pop cilture references a lot to try and add depth. It's like the dialogue during some character bonding was aimed at teens. And I'm no space engineer, but I think fixing a de-pressurising space helmet with gaffa tape was ridiculous. The end ezcue was laughable. I know they needed a tense moment but come on... use your brain. I was gonna give it a 5 but Matt Damon tried hard and its not awful.
Anything can happen if you try hard....in the movies only !
While the book was excellent, there were several key moments missing from the movie. I noticed it straight away, such as the communication going back to the "Pathfinder" method, or the Rover breaking down. Or even the little moments between the Ares 3 crew or back on Earth. I understand there was a certain runtime, but my girlfriend (who never left the book) left the cinema quite disappointed, especially after hearing me rave about the book forever. Well acted, fantastic cinematography...but something was just missing.
Book nerd.
I liked it but have some gripes. I like that it didn't feel as repetitive as the book.
It doesn't really get into Mark's head as much as it could. I don't feel like I know his character by the end and that there's not that much character development.
One other pet peeve is them showing a title card with which Sol it is but then he used the camera anyway so we don't need them. Wonder if they ever thought that making the film.
The Martian is an amazing movie that is carried more than anything else by the protagonist and the suspense the film constantly creates.
Matt Damon was undeniably the perfect cast for this role. I cannot think of many actors that could make spending an hour and a half with a single, isolated person so god damn enjoyable. This is made possible with what surely must be a mix of the wonderful character of Mark Watney and the perfect execution by Damon. Mark is a capable, intelligent botanist that is faced with a situation so dire that most of us would probably collapse in despair. Instead, Mark lightens up with his never-ending optimism and lightheartedness. As he explained to his students at the very end, when thinking that you will most likely die, you can either accept it and work on a solution or fail. It is so satisfying to see him immediately work towards a more than clever solution, make the absolute most of his situation and document all of it by joking around on the video logs, giving us a unique look into his daily life as the most isolated human in this universe. Not only is it fantastic by its own, it also gives the film an unusual permission for exposition dumps, since it is very much believable that he would talk to himself and the camera, leaving behind a legacy, even if he dies, to keep himself sane. His reactions are nothing you would expect when hearing about the (great) premise of this movie. Nevertheless, they are never unbelievable. He is not a one-dimensional character, we see months and years of his work crumble before him and he reacts properly, he is frustrated, has fits of rage, but also jests and dances and laughs and all put together make a very enjoyable 2 hours.
As a result of this, the comedy in this movie is outstanding. Even though it is very much an intense, gritty movie with a lot of weight to it, you will end up laughing aloud at your screen or at the very least smile at the silliness in an otherwise very desperate situation. So, yes, this movie focuses mostly on one character and so naturally the supporting cast has to suffer under it, right? Yes, but that doesn't take away anything from the movie. Each person has distinct traits and even though we see very little of them, you'll grow to love most of them, simply because they seem to have such a complex dynamic off-screen. This is also helped by the fact that even for the most minor roles they use an all-star, talented cast.
Now, onto the atmosphere. Ridley Scott does know how to make wonderful establishing shots, but more than that it's the scenery that makes the feeling of this film. The technology, the clothes, the spaceships, the tools, it all looks like it could be a true story, happening in just a decade from now. Due to this, it has weight to it that not many science fiction movies can accomplish. I believe this kind is called "hard science-fiction" and The Martian definitely falls under that category. It feels as if the science behind it all drives the plot forward, as problems arise from the limits of the near-future technology and it's Mark's understanding of basic science that enables him to survive, not some plot holes or ex-machinas. From the beginning to the very end the audience believes that everything can and will go wrong, we feel with the character's overwhelming joy of his achievements and the subsequent loss of everything, which leads to a constant feeling of danger and unpredictability. The often unassuming shots, such as during the night in the primitively patched up base of operations and the docking scene on the space station, in both of which nothing bad happens, add a lot to that.
So, all in all, even though the collaboration with NASA may have lead to too much time spent on Earth, as theorized by Chris Stuckmann, it added a whole new layer to the film. It is noticeable that the writers and the filming crew sent hundreds of questions to NASA, made hundreds of photos and, to be frank, I don't mind that this benefits NASA in popularizing space travel.
Thanks Southpark for making me hear Matt Damons name in an R-tard voice every damn time lol
One of the best science fiction movies of all times.
Much better that i expected. Loved this movie
Potatoes... Potatoes everywhere!
Great movie! Iron Man style ;)
Just AMAZING!!!
The tension, the drama, everything was just too good to watch.
Great job Mr. Damon.
It's just a poor comedy film. I laughed few times, but nothing more to appreciate.
The Martian depended on Matt Damon's performance in the lead role. In contrast to spiritual predecessors like Gravity and Castaway it wasn't a one-man show--there's a murders row of supporting actors and an important story of what's going on back home--but the film spent a great deal of time with Damon's Mark Watney and his lonely trials and tribulations on a desolate planet. That meant that for much of the movie, Damon alone had to convey his character's distress, his resolve, his humor, and his humanity, with no one but the camera to talk to, and he did it with flying colors. I have yet to see many of the big films and lauded performances of 2015, but it's hard to imagine many roles with a degree of difficulty like this one, and the performance Damon delivered more than lived up to the challenge.
Part of what makes Watney likable and endearing enough that the audience not only tolerates spending the film with him, but invests in his plight and attempts at rescue, is the humor in the film. It's not surprising in a film penned by Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Drew Goddard, but despite the extreme premise of the film and the world's-watching stakes of the conflict, the dialogue is filled to the brim with laughs about the silly and mundane in the midst of the weighty circumstances Watney and the team trying to help him back home, and the film includes so many of those small human moments that help viewers buy into a plot focused alternatively on solving science problems and technobabble.
Those human moments--from demeaning then giving into Commander Lewis's taste in music to reassuring your boss that a profane kiss off might have been meant in a positive way--are important, because beyond Watney, most of the film's characters are quick sketches. That never hurts the film, however, because even when the characters feel stock--Donald Glover as the unorthodox young engineer, Jeff Bridges as the kind-hearted but pragmatic head of the agency--each of the actors in a stellar cast sells their role in the supporting ensemble with aplomb and each of them has just enough flavor to make them distinct.
The tone of the film helps on that front as well. The way The Martian balances the crestfallen sense that Watney is doomed, the joy in his sisyphean efforts to survive, the tension in the moments where he struggles to find a solution or the efforts to rescue him hit a setback, and the simple but sweet reminders that these are human beings who do silly things even in a crisis. Keeping things light, while never sacrificing the emotion or the stakes of the narrative is a difficult task, but Goddard's script and Ridley Scott's direction manage it with style.
It's hard to believe that Scott is the same director who unleashed Prometheus on the world just a few short years ago. Whereas one space-bound film, albeit one that hews more toward science fiction, is practically incoherent in terms of its plot, The Martian builds plausibly and organically, to where despite the film's 2+ hour runtime, the narrative progresses so smoothly, and the characters' decisions and actions seem so natural and logical in that progression, that you barely feel it.
At the same time, Scott makes the most of his setting and his stars. The production design, from the realistic but futuristic ships and equipments in space to the rust-colored vistas Scott sweeps through in wide shots, add to both the reality and the beauty of the film. Scott also frames much of the film through third-person video screens, whether it's Watney's video journals or CNN coverage of a NASA press conference, which gradually fade into a more traditional shot, conveying both a sense of verisimilitude in these somewhat outlandish events, but also a personal, intimate sense of place, especially with the film's protagonist. In total, it creates beautiful images to wow the viewer with the scope and magnitude of the setting and the problem, but also brings the audience closer to the protagonist.
The film's greatest achievement is how it fosters a complete buy-in with Watney's struggle. In a film that feels like a cross between Hatchet and Apollo 13, the way The Martian shows its main character solving problem after problem with good humor and without making him seem like an implausible wunderkind breeds affection and investment. In many survival films along these lines, the endgame feels inevitable, and the emotional stakes of the climax suffer. The Martian does falter a bit in manufacturing additional, piled on drama at the film's close, but there's such a catharsis in its conclusion, in the form of a beautifully composed scene that, good-or-bad, represents the culmination of the personal struggle of Watney, and the delirious efforts of Vincent Kapoor (a crackling Chiwetel Ejiofor) on the ground.
The Martian features the trappings of classic film--the dizzying shots, the foxhole compatriot mentality, the best and brightest scrambling to do right, and the man against nature narrative, replete with some leafy green symbolism--but it uses it all in service of the supremely human and nerdy. And it can boast a virtuoso performer who can amuse and enthrall with nothing more than a disco soundtrack and a potato. The excitement, pathos, and laughter Scott, Goddard, Damon, and their collaborators are able to wring from what is often a very solitary journey is no small achievement, and The Martian offers a feel-good story that earns every bit of the feeling.
It's simply perfect!
I haven't watched a movie with +2 Hours of length without getting bored for a while
This movie is brilliant and it's also funny .
Outstanding film, as a person who loves the idea of space and especially the technicalities of getting there, it really got me thinking!. Great movie.
Rather predictable and sometimes boring film that brings little new to the table .The most interesting parts are of Matt Damon trying to conceive of different ways to survive in the hostile environment of Mars, unfortunately these parts are constantly interrupted by lazy expository scenes scattered throughout the film, taking place inside of NASA's control center, needlessly reminding us of what's at stake for the main character until it becomes painfully commonplace. If you've seen any of Scott's other recent films, there's really nothing new that stands out in The Martian from his current directorial efforts. Being adapted from a rather solid book, there's strong sense of writing here to be found for sure, but anyone hoping to find a glimpse of Ridley's past artistic ingenuity will be walking away disappointed, yet again. In terms of genre, you already know what to expect if you've seen Apollo 13. It's an OK film, but nothing extraordinary. 6/10
7/10
A solid survival flick; good but could have been great.
Matt Damon puts in a very good performance as Mark Watney, astronaut-botanist stranded on Mars., The rest of the cast I found to be rather anonymous and flat. Sean Bean looked like he'd turned up to the wrong film and Jeff Daniels as the head of NASA didn't really work for me. As for the rest, they were the usual bunch of stereotypes and one-deminsional characters that nobody ever cares about. That said, Watney really is the only character that matters in this film and Damon was superbly cast for this role.
The movie is aesthetically stunning, well paced and very well directed. Watney's trials and tribulations are engaging, but I often found myself feeling it was a little too dumbed down ("I'm going to science the shit out of it") and the comic relief a little too overused leaving the viewer without any real sense of the danger or despair Watney would surely have felt in such a situation. The only time I felt any of this anxiety was in the last 15 minutes and then I really was on the edge of my seat!
Despite a few shortfalls I found it a very enjoyable film; it was entertaining, interesting and engaging.
Exquisite! Full of exciting moments, and just when you think you've seen everything - BAM! Another twist.
Such a great film, great cast, 130 action packed minutes - there is not a single thing I don't like about this film. I rate it 9 because I rated Interstellar 10 (and Interstellar is beyond epic in my opinion) and I just wanted to make some space between the two (no pun intended). Anyways, 10/10 would recommend watching it.
I really feel that this movie gives the book justice. Yes, of course, some amendments needed to be made to shrink the plot into a movie format. It is important however that the spirit and the wit of the book remained. I truly enjoyed watching this movie and highly recommend it to anyone. This movie definitely desererves it's praise.
Yes, it can be cliché at times (lot of times), but it is still a fantastic experience. Breathtaking!
I like it, but it's definitely not the best space movie I've seen. The performances were great but yet again not the best I've seen. Ridley manages to make his movies feel imaginary, and this feels just like how I'd imagine being stuck on Mars. Except, it did a little more thinking. The cast was a constellation, the score/soundtrack was gravitational, the visuals were cosmic, the script sucked me out afew times, but I wasn't mad about it. You know what you're expecting if you've seen Ridley before, and if you haven't, you'll want to see more. Overall, it's just a really good sci-fi.
Such a joy to watch. Watched it many times. Never get tired of it.
This movie certainly had a super cool concept and was honestly beautifully shot, but I never felt a sense of urgency or suspense in the plot or pacing, which is something I would have wanted for this movie to be elevated from “good” to “great” status.
Furthermore, I never really connected with the main character on a meaningful level due to Mark’s continuous jokes and inability to be serious. I would have really preferred a little more depth to his character…
If you haven't read the book, then you should. The film is a great-looking, well presented and overall excellent adaptation.
One of my favorite adventure/dystopian movies, as it follows a group of astronauts who are conducting experiments on Mars and they seem to have lost one as they escape just in time for a big storm, but it turns out later on that one team member survived and has to learn to survive year(s) on Mars. Casting Matt Damon is perfect. The plot development is quick but fantastically well done. The intrigue and plot twists and interest (as this could be non fiction one day) makes for an edge if your seat watch.
This one was a blast. The DIY science, the resilience and fortitude, the harsh terrain, Mat Damon's charm, the collective effort to save him the film seamlessly weaves it all together to make an inspirational survivalist film on human fortitude surprisingly avoiding the potential to have easily veered into a drab gloomy drepessing territory.
Amazing film. Good and fresh story about a astronaut left behind on Mars. Must watch if you love space
overall a great movie watched the extended cut 2.25hr is long but again was a great movie
Ok I do believe that the Chinese have a much better rocket but I absolutely refuse to believe that they could 'lend' it to the US - just 'please keep it within the scientific circles'. That is basically firing squad and rightly so. I also refuse to believe that someone is able cultivate a potato field using his own shit as fertilizer. Just no. Sean Bean did not get killed this time - only fired.
An exceptional movie with a plot that is both engaging and thrilling. Matt Damon delivers a superb performance as Watney, portraying the character's resourcefulness, wit, and determination. The supporting cast is also excellent, with standout performances from Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The special effects in The Martian are also top-notch, with visuals that bring the desolate, alien landscape of Mars to life. From the rovers and spacesuits to the interiors of the spacecraft, the attention to detail in the movie is simply incredible. Overall, a must-watch for fans of science fiction and adventure movies.
This might be my favourite man vs nature survival drama.
There’s something about this movie that makes it incredibly engaging and amusing. Simply, this is a space movie done correctly. There are many out there that are “pretty”, or really well shot, but so many space movies still feel bland and/or repetitive. That is not the case here, as this is potentially Matt Damon’s greatest role. Not to mention the rest of the cast is stellar as well. This is one worth recommending to many people.
Rating: 4.5/5 - 9/10 - Highly Recommend
3D regular Blu-ray. Fantastic. What else. Nothing. Watch it again.
Definitely one of the better movies I've watched in awhile. It had "just enough" feasability to be enjoyable, even though the odds of all these things/circumstances actually happening are a stretch. The overall theme throughout the movie was what made it so absolkutely enjoyable, however, and that theme was simply "Never give up." No matter how bleak and dire the situation, we hold within ourselves the ability to keep thinking, keep processing, keep working the problem...and refuse to quit. It had enough lighthearted moments in it to take the dark edge off, and yes, even though it was far-fetched, it had that constant ring of hope that kept you watching. It's a long movie, granted, but it was so riveting that I was able to sit through the entire thing with no problem. The closing scenes were beautifully done, and all-in-all, this was one of the best I've watched in a long time. :thumbsup_tone2::thumbsup_tone2::thumbsup_tone2::thumbsup_tone2::thumbsup_tone2:

Wow, this film does not waste much time. It throws you right in at the beginning, with the Mars mission that strands our main character Mark Wattney, and going in that was something that took me by surprise. In a good way, I might add.
Heartwarming true story about about a clandestine government assassin who wakes up on the moon and grows potatoes. Plz watch.
Pretty and good but not challenging
Even if i am not the biggest Damon's fan i think his perfomance was great in this movie. Also it's so nice to see Scott back in form.7.7/10
I say we send Matt Damon to mars after watching this movie. What a great performance
Absolutely Crazy ! Just realized I love this kinf of movies
Finally watched Martian . I am in Awe .
I agree ... disco does suck. That said, I'm fairly certain Abba was not considered disco, right? Good movie, quite enjoyable.
this was a fun movie to watch. I watched the movie shortly after finishing the book and I couldn't help but compare the two ... ALOT. I didn't know how they would adapt the book into a movie because the book was told in journal entries, but they did a good job with that. the cast... it's pretty obvious what I'm gonna say but a black guy plays a brown which is close enough.. I guess? I feel like if you haven't read the book you will be confused , but that aside it's still a good movie to watch and it's amazing, visually. Nice film Bois, finished this one at 1:22AM after starting it at 10:30PM...
One of the best movies I've watched in my life.
The book is great, but the film is not even the half of it.
Extremely engaging. Damon is great in the role, and delivers quite a bit of humour, which is unexpected from a Ridley Scott movie. It's surprisingly thrilling for a movie about sending a rescue mission to save a marooned man. The attention to authenticity is appreciated, but what's more surprising is how exciting the science is.
Yes there are huge plot holes, and yes there are lots of space cliché, but the scale, the scope of this movie can make you completely forget all of that, and have your heart pump beat after beat with all the airlocks, spacesuits, hatch doors, rockets and space stations made kapoom powpow exploding just to get Matt Damien back to earth! ha! kinda sounded ridiculous but it did work its magic.
The Martian is Ridley Scott showing why he is the revered director he is. He gets fabulous performances from a stellar cast (no pun intended) moves the story along at a rip-roaring pace and wrings every piece of emotion, humour, and drama out of the film that can be done. Drawing from an equally fantastic novel by Andy Weir the only difficult task the makers must have had was which parts to trim down or remove to fit the riveting story into the 144 minutes running time. Wisely the extensive and wholly appropriate humour was left into the narrative. This is nearly as perfect a conversion of the novel to film as I’ve seen in a long time.
Recreating the surface of Mars is a triumph and you can truly believe you are looking at the beautiful but desolate surface of the planet in all of those scenes featuring Mark Watney. Matt Damon inhabits the skin of the character of Watney in such a way that you truly believe he is stranded on the surface of the planet, that he is a clever, funny and overall optimistic scientist. It is easily his best performance in many a year. He makes Mark Watney a man you want to see saved and then you want him to tell how it happened. It is, dare I say, a triumph. There I said it.
I often say films have an able or great supporting cast but in the case of The Martian this is more than true, the stalwart Jeff Daniels alongside Michael Pen, Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofo, Kristin Wiig and Jessica Chastain all can carry a film on their own but add them into the mix, give them strong and distinct characters and you have a perfect set of actors all adding to the mix.
The story is about a man being thrust into an extraordinary set of circumstances and having to rely on his intelligence and skills to survive, yet no matter how good these are he has to rely on his comrades and friends to be equally as brave and ingenious. An exciting story of peril on an alien planet is a big theme but it is boiled down to the personal level and infused with a huge dose of realistic and frankly very funny humour and instead of getting a scary and potentially depressing film you get a film about friendship, risk and optimism. The best of us will work together to help others. It’s a good message about how good we can be – a rare theme nowadays
This is a very good film, watch it.
This is a very good book, read it.
