Buenos Aires > Rosario The prologue of the 38th edition of the Dakar was marred by an accident that saw competitor 360 veer off course at km 6.6 of the special and injure four spectators. Race officials immediately deployed all resources available to the site of the accident and decided to neutralise the race. As a result, the timed section was cancelled for the trucks. As for the race, the car special delivered a pleasant surprise.
Rosario > Villa Carlos Paz [CANCELLED] The first stage of the 38th Dakar has been cancelled due to extreme weather on the course. A double whammy of storms and extremely thick low clouds kept aircraft grounded, making it impossible for them to guarantee the safety of the competitors. As a result, race director Étienne Lavigne was left with only one realistic option. The competitors headed to Villa Carlos Paz under link section rules after the decision was announced. A route has been selected on which motorcycles and quads move in a convoy, while cars are allowed to travel on their own. The trucks had not departed the Rosario bivouac yet, so they are heading to today's finish on the course for assistance vehicles. It goes without saying that there were no changes in the classification and the start of stage 2 tomorrow will be based on the places at the end of yesterday's prologue. Joan Barreda's Honda will be the first motorcycle and Bernhard ten Brinke's Toyota the first car. In the latter category, the 46 competitors who were unable to start the prologue's timed section due to the accident of competitor 360 will be assigned notional times by race officials. Tomorrow's stage from Villa Carlos Paz to Termas de Río Hondo is tricky to say the least. An initial link section 70 km long will take the competitors to the start of the second special, the longest of the 2016 edition. With 510 km's worth of easy but fast tracks on the menu for the cars and trucks and 450 km for the motorcycles and quads, the first gaps could open up between the favourites in each category. The end of the special lies about 250 km from Termas de Río Hondo.
Villa Carlos Paz > Termas de Río Hondo After a short prologue and a cancelled first stage, the Dakar genuinely kicked off between Villa Carlos Paz and Termas de Rio Hondo. On a quick stage without significant navigational difficulties, Toby Price was the first to leave his mark on the race with his second stage victory on the Dakar. Battling in the provisional times throughout the special with Ruben Faria, the Australian finally made his superiority count at the end of the stage, grabbing the lead in the general standings by two seconds from his Portuguese rival. For a first attempt, Sébastien Loeb carried off a master stroke by winning his first stage on the Dakar, despite losing two minutes in the mud. The Frenchman is the star of the day and takes the lead in the car category.
Termas Rio Hondo > Jujuy On this third stage, the special was predicted to suit quick drivers and riders. Indeed, it lived up to its expectations. Sébastien Loeb gave a veritable demonstration behind the wheel of his Peugeot, just like Joan Barreda behind the handlebars of his Honda. Whilst Barreda, enjoying his 14th stage win on the Dakar with this success, regained the lead in the bike category, Sébastien Loeb strengthened his position of leader in the car race.
Jujuy > Jujuy The Peugeot armada dealt a huge blow to its rivals at the end of an amazing first half of the marathon stage. Stéphane Peterhansel won ahead of teammates Carlos Sainz and Sébastien Loeb. Nasser Al-Attiyah (Mini) finished in fourth place, preventing Cyril Despres from completing the Lion's whitewash by 57 seconds. In the motorcycle category, Paulo Gonçalves (Honda) finished behind Joan Barreda, but he was named the victor after his team leader was again caught speeding and penalised. The Portuguese rider also moved to the top spot in the classification.
Jujuy > Uyuni Already the winner of two stages on his first Dakar and leader of the general standings in front of the rally's specialists, Sébastien Loeb continued his progress on this 38th edition. He picked up another victory today and also extended his lead in the general standings. Behind him, Carlos Sainz and Stéphane Peterhansel gave a second consecutive 1-2-3 to Peugeot. In the bike category, Toby Price won on completion of a perfectly ridden stage, climbing up to third in the general standings.
Uyuni > Uyuni The rivalry has been revived within the Peugeot team. After another demonstration by Sébastien Loeb yesterday, today triumph was in the hands of Stéphane Peterhansel. Taking advantage of the problems that befell Sébastien Loeb (a puncture and faulty electronics), the record holder for victories on the Dakar won the special and took hold of the lead in the general standings. With a finish 8'15 behind his countryman, Loeb lost the leadership of the car category by 27 seconds. In the bike race, Toby Price (KTM) was victorious, for the third time since the start. In the general standings, whilst the Portuguese rider retains command of the rally, Price has come back to within 35 seconds. The day also witnessed a considerable amount of withdrawals.
Uyuni > Salta Carlos Sainz finally managed to bring home the bacon, taking the seventh stage of the 38th Dakar. The Spaniard and his DKR 2008 netted the sixth consecutive win for Peugeot, which only failed to win on the opening day. Sébastien Loeb wrestled the overall lead back from Peterhansel. In the motorcycle category, Antoine Méo took his maiden Dakar win at the end of a shortened stage.
Salta 289 vehicles made it to the 2016 Dakar's rest day in Salta (112 motorcycles, 36 quads, 90 cars and 51 trucks, amounting to 83% of all starters). Peugeot smashed everyone's expectations, especially with freshman Sébastien Loeb, who holds the lead halfway through the race ahead of teammates Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. Salta > Belen Nasser Al Attiyah has finally brought an end to the Peugeot domination of this 38th Dakar. At the end of a completely crazy stage, the leading Mini triumphed ahead of the two Peugeots driven by Carlos Sainz, 12 seconds behind, and Stéphane Peterhansel, 31 seconds behind. As for Sébastien Loeb, having difficulty in the dunes, he made a wrong move towards the end of the special and drops down the general standings. In the bike race, Toby Price (KTM) enjoyed a twofold triumph, winning the stage and taking command of the general standings.
Belen > Belen Carlos Sainz is not the type of man to miss an opportunity a second time. Deprived of victory yesterday by 12 seconds, today he won a stage shortened due to the extreme heat by a similar margin of 10 seconds. The Spaniard triumphed on top of a new-look stage podium, as Erik Van Loon (Mini) finished on his coat-tails and Mikko Hirvonen (Mini) completed the day in third, only 17 seconds behind. Sainz especially took advantage of Stéphane Peterhansel's arrival down the stage order at the advanced finishing line in order to regain the commands of the general standings. The Spaniard now boasts a lead of 7'03'' over his French team-mate. Toby Price (KTM) again won in the bike category, but due to the premature finish to the race, he did not fully benefit from his show of force today. Having started the day in second place in the overall rankings, Paulo Gonçalves came very close to plummeting down the race hierarchy, but was given a life-line by the possible application of a grouped time that could keep him in the club of pretenders to the title.
Belen > La Rioja Stéphane Peterhansel (Peugeot) smashed the opposition at the end of a frantic stage in the car category. He rose above the difficulties and capitalised on the misadventures of his direct rivals to assume a very comfortable lead in the classification of the 38th Dakar. As the day draws to a close in La Rioja, it is hard to see who could possibly deny him a twelfth victory in Rosario. Cyril Despres, his teammate, was the only driver who managed to keep up with the Peter phenomenon. Al-Attiyah (Mini), Hirvonen (Mini), Sainz (Peugeot) and Loeb, who came in fifth, were hit by mechanical problems or got stuck in the sand. The motorcycle race saw Štefan Svitko (KTM) claim his first scalp at the Dakar, but leader Toby Price (KTM) still enjoys a margin of over 28 minutes over the Slovakian rider in the general classification.
La Rioja > San Juan Nasser Al Attiyah today obtained a second success on the 38th edition of the Dakar. The Mini driver won after putting the pressure on during the second part of the stage. He beat Sébastien Loeb (Peugeot), who broke a gimbal two kilometres from the finishing line, and his team-mate Mikko Hirvonen, who came in third. Stéphane Peterhansel (Peugeot), leader of the overall ranking, finished fourth and lost a little more than 8 minutes to the day's winner. In the bike race, Toby Price (KTM), like Peterhansel, controlled his rivals, whilst Antoine Meo made a big impact to win the stage and grab hold of third place in the overall ranking.
San Juan > Villa Carlos Paz As a sixth title in the car category approaches, Stéphane Peterhansel did not take the slightest risk to reach Villa Carlos Paz. The race for stage victory was sumptuous, however, between the two Toyotas of Leeroy Poulter and Giniel De Villiers and the two Minis of Nasser Al Attiyah and Mikko Hirvonen. The latter picked up his first win on the Dakar in a tense finish. The scenario was similar in the bike category with the leader, Toby Price, focusing on control and Helder Rodrigues off the leash. The official Yamaha rider grabbed his first success of the 2016 vintage as well as fourth place in the overall ranking. As for Antoine Meo, third this morning, he was the day's big loser. After a fall, 20 kilometres from the finishing line, he drops three places in the overall ranking.
Villa Carlos Paz > Rosario The 38th edition of the Dakar ended in Rosario today with Stéphane Peterhansel (Peugeot) wrapping up his sixth triumph in the car category and Toby Price, racing in the motorcycle category, stamping his name on the list of winners for the first time. Marcos Patronelli grabbed another victory in the quad race, while Gerard de Rooy made it two in the truck category. Today's stage was marked by Sébastien Loeb's fourth victory and Pablo Quintanilla's triumph in the motorcycle race.
The 40th edition of the Dakar Rally is held in South America, revisiting the Pacific Ocean and the dunes of Peru. Coverage of Stage 1 sees competitors plunge from the outset into the sands in a 272 kilometer ride from Lima to Pisco.
Stage 2 of the Dakar Rally 2018 sees riders on the Pisco loop, 90 percent off-piste. The 278 kilometer route has no bike tracks, and the canyons of the first 40 kilometers of the special stage won't make for an easy ride.
Stage 3 of the Dakar Rally 2018 sees bikes and quads leave the main route for a 15 kilometer detour from Pisco to San Juan De Marcona.
Stage 4 of the Dakar Rally 2018 sees drivers tackle one of the longest ever sandy sections in the history of the Dakar: a total of 100 km, with dunes of all sizes throughout San Juan de Marcona.
Stage 5 of the Dakar Rally 2018, from San Juan de Marcona to Arequipa sees bikes and quads take a separate route. The race starts at daybreak and follows two different sections of special stage.
Stage 6 of the Dakar Rally 2018. from Arequipa to La Paz, sees the riders leave Peru and the desert to take on the mountains.

Stage 8 of the Dakar Rally 2018 is a marathon stage, which includes the longest special stage of the rally, covering nearly 500 kilometres.
Stage 9 sees the cancellation of racing between Tupiza and Salta as heavy rains caused rivers to overflow.
Stage 10 of the Dakar Rally 2018 takes competitors from Salta to Belen.
Stage 11 of the Dakar Rally 2018 sees competitors travel through Belen to Chilecito. It's one of the toughest spots in Argentina, and the place where a good racer will be able to shine.

January 5 th 2020 - 14:49 [GMT + 3] Maps can be deceiving at first sight. What seemed an essentially coastal course turned out to be a surprising hodgepodge of terrains for competitors in the first stage of the Dakar. Even the last two winners of the Dakar, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Carlos Sainz, along with defending SSV champion "Chaleco" López, were blindsided by the rocky sectors near the end of the stage, leading to punctures that cost them several minutes apiece. The competitors only really felt the coastal wind on the liaison taking them to Al Wajh. The first to arrive will enjoy the refreshing breeze, but chilling winds await laggards who only reach the town in the evening… or after nightfall.
January 6 th 2020 - 14:51 [GMT + 3] The riders and drivers on the Dakar were never far from the beach… but today they did not encounter much sand between Al Wajh and Neom, as they constantly followed the Red Sea coastline. On their journey towards the north of the country, they especially travelled from valley to valley, with navigational decisions to be made at all times, which even left some of the most experienced crews dizzy, such as the Carlos Sainz / Lucas Cruz duo. As they reached a semi-mountainous section on the second part of the special, they hardly had the chance to appreciate the view of Jabal Dabbagh Mountain, because their full attention was required to negotiate the rocky terrain threatening their tyres and, more worryingly, their machinery. In the Toyota team, Nasser Al-Attiyah bore the brunt of such mishaps but without serious consequences. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Fernando Alonso…
January 7 th 2020 - 15:14 [GMT + 3] The city of the “new future” does not yet exist, but the competitors were indeed summoned for what seemed like a journey through time on the loop around Neom. The fast tracks in the first 100 kilometres mostly led competitors on a slalom between the giant rocks of Wadi ash Sharmah that give the impression they have been there since the dawn of time. The riders, drivers and crews then made their way through landscapes typical of neighbouring Jordan as they swept round the Jabal ash Shifa Mountains. In the final section, the rocky terrain required the utmost caution from all the competitors.
January 8 th 2020 - 16:33 [GMT + 3] Departing Neom for Al-ʿUla means leaving behind the city of the future to discover the ancient wonders of the master builders of the Nabatean civilisation, who knew how to cut out temples in rocks two millennia ago. The sites peppered with a hundred temples are, of course, out of the reach of the Dakar competitors. However, even getting close to this area has taken a titanic effort. Riding at altitude in the early morning, bikers had to overcome the mountain chill, but especially the rocky terrain and a crossing of the Harrat al 'Uwayrid volcanic region, where any navigation mistakes take a heavy toll. Pictures of the tombs will have to wait.
January 9 th 2020 - 14:52 [GMT + 3] On leaving Al Ula this morning, the riders, drivers and crews of the Dakar threw themselves into a genuine exercise of dexterity. Over 150 kilometres, the mainly sandy terrain forced them to be extremely watchful due to several rocky sections. They then reached the high plateaux of Jabal Sammar at an altitude of almost 1,500 metres, where in fact the hills to be tackled were often a series of tricky steps to be climbed. In any case, the city of Ha’il, renowned as one of the major settlements from the pre-Saudi era, is especially the national capital of the discipline for all-terrain aficionados. The Rally of Ha’il is the most prestigious and oldest event in the country, on which Saudi riders and drivers have been battling against each other for more than ten years, making it a necessary stopping point for the first Dakar in Saudi Arabia!
January 10 th 2020 - 15:35 [GMT + 3] In the middle of the desert! The menu for stage 6 gave the riders, drivers and crews an uninterrupted taste of sand. No villages and not even a river, just plenty of dromedaries from the start in Ha’il, in a splendid off-piste environment with dunes of reasonable size… at least for the moment. Over the 477 kilometres, the machines and their riders and drivers were not safe from mishaps. Rather than the terrain, it was these shortcomings that led to a varying degree of damage to the prospects of Johnny Aubert, Kevin Benavides and also Jakub Przygonski. Once the stage was over, the shock was cultural in nature for the competitors on entering Riyadh: the capital of Saudi Arabia has conserved the heritage of the Bedouins but also boasts the utmost modernity regarding its infrastructures and technology.
January 11 th 2020 - 14:18 [GMT + 3] After six stages, the first edition of the Dakar held in Saudi Arabia has reached the capital Riyadh, with 262 vehicles (108 motorbikes, 15 quads, 65 cars, 34 SSVs and 40 trucks) still in the race, amounting to 77% of the competitors who set off from Jeddah a week ago. 39 of the 80 competitors who were forced to withdraw have decided to continue their adventure and tackle the remaining stages under Dakar Experience rules. As the race heads towards the dunes of the Empty Quarter, which have the potential to shake up the classification, the leaders of the various categories face different scenarios: Ricky Brabec has staked his claim to become the first American winner in the motorbike category, Carlos Sainz is pursuing his third victory in the car category and Ignacio Casale has almost got the quad race in the bag. Finally, "Chaleco" López holds a slim lead in the SSV category, while Kamaz remain the big favourites to win the truck race despite the withdrawal of their leader, Eduard Nikolayev.
January 12 th 2020 - 15:12 [GMT + 3] Stage 7 was marked by a crash that claimed the life of Paulo Gonçalves, who was taking part in his 13th Dakar. The victories of Kevin Benavides (motorbikes) and Carlos Sainz (cars) take second place, leaving the centre stage to a memorial to Team Hero's Portuguese rider to be held during the daily briefing with all competitors present. The essentials The Dakar mourns Paulo Gonçalves, one of the most experienced and beloved champions of the rally-raid family. The runner-up of the 2015 edition and 2013 cross-country rallies world champion crashed 276 km into a special that was ultimately won by his former teammate Kevin Benavides, who tried in vain to assist the Portuguese rider together with Toby Price, the first competitor to reach the scene of the accident. It was a nice tribute on the part of the Argentinian biker, who beat Joan Barreda and Matthias Walkner to claim his first stage win in 2020 after falling out of contention for the overall. Ricky Brabec remains in control of the general classification. In the quad category, Ignacio Casale also defended his lead in spite of Frenchman Simon Vitse's second stage win in a row. The car race again boiled down to a three-way fight featuring Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Stéphane Peterhansel, with the Spanish leader of the general classification taking the spoils in Wadi Al-Dawasir thanks to a rock-solid performance. "Chaleco" López surrendered the lead in the SSV category to American Casey Currie, who finished second right behind Blade Hildebrand, now racing under Dakar Experience rules. Finally, Andrey Karginov won the battle of the juggernauts by a slim margin over teammate Dmitry Sotnikov and strengthened his grip on the overall.
January 13 th 2020 - 14:02 [GMT + 3] Wadi, the valley in Arabic, is a fairly good way to describe the stage in which the cars, SSVs and trucks took part today. The crews did not get to see much relief, apart from around one hundred kilometres on the Wajid plateau where several impressive canyons provided variation from the pleasure of driving among the dunes. Indeed, for most of the stage, all that changed was the shades of the sand for the competitors on the Dakar: ochre, orange, mustard yellow or light beige depending on their position in relation to the sun. Following a fast, straight portion over the first fifty kilometres, they had to overcome a sequence of small chains of dunes before reaching the finishing line. In this domain, the usual specialists were not troubled.
January 14 th 2020 - 16:48 [GMT + 3] Today started in a mineral ambiance. The riders and drivers on the Dakar will not see any more stones, but had to tackle 150 kilometres of rocky terrain in an environment that was different to the canyons and mountains of the first week. This time, they raced past immense cliffs, admiring them from wide valleys or travelling along the edge of the precipices. As the route headed east for the second part of the special, sand was predominant: on fast tracks or on vast expanses lacking in any relief. As they reach Haradh, they will also approach the “Empty Quarter”, which makes up the programme of the forthcoming two-day marathon stage.
January 15 th 2020 - 16:17 [GMT + 3] Has Joan Barreda taken too much time to hit top pace? The Spaniard won his first special of the year after several good stages in previous days and could pay for his over-cautious first week of the rally. This is in stark contrast with his Honda team-mate Ricky Brabec, who was quick to build up a healthy lead over the pack, which he continues to maintain stage after stage. The same attitude was adopted to date by Ignacio Casale before the Chilean’s navigational failure on stage ten, which cost him a considerable portion of his lead over Simon Vitse, leaving the spotlight to Polish rider Kamil Wiśniewski, who won the day’s special. Carlos Sainz scored a double whammy by winning the stage and especially taking advantage of the navigation mistakes made by Stéphane Peterhansel and Nasser Al-Attiyah, to regain breathing space in the general standings. With a lead that now stands at 18 minutes, El Matador will be able to see his rivals coming. This is also the case for Casey Currie, who moved further ahead in the general standings following the difficulties of Chaleco López, with the stage victory going to rookie and Dakar Experience competitor Mitchell Guthrie. In the truck race, Anton Shibalov brought a halt to the series of wins by his Kamaz team-mate Andrey Karginov, without worrying the Russian who is heading for his second triumph on the Dakar.
January 16 th 2020 - 14:43 [GMT + 3] The Empty Quarter, a vast expanse almost as big as France, boasts long, unbroken successions of dunes stretching for 80 kilometres. In contrast with yesterday, when the prevailing winds messed with stage 10, the weather today made the terrain far more hospitable as the increased humidity meant fewer competitors got stuck. The return trip to Haradh was raced at a much higher pace. This area serves as the crossroads from which the Dakar will leave the Empty Quarter and set course for Riyadh and Qiddiya.
January 17 th 2020 - 13:48 [GMT + 3] The 42nd edition of the Dakar took competitors from the shores of the Red Sea in Jeddah, around the canyons and mountains of the western part of the country, over the dunes of the Empty Quarter and all the way to the Qiddiya Sports and Culture Complex near the capital Riyadh. In the end, American biker Ricky Brabec put an end to Honda's 31-year drought, Carlos Sainz took his third title in his third different car, Casey Currie gave America another reason to celebrate in the SSV race, Ignacio Casale took back the throne in quads and Andrey Karginov extended the victorious streak of the Kamaz trucks. 237 out of the 342 vehicles that started the rally in Jeddah (69.3%) appear in the final general classification: 96 motorbikes, 12 quads, 58 cars, 31 SSVs and 40 trucks. A further 19 vehicles withdrew from the race but reached Qiddiya under Dakar Experience rules.

Stage 1A: Jeddah > Hail The 409 vehicles on the start list inaugurated the Dakar like never before. After departing Jeddah along the Red Sea for a northbound 225 km transfer, the starting shot for the qualifying stage was fired at the entrance to the Medina region. The opening 19 km sprint was a sign of things to come: sandy tracks and dunes in an all-sand timed sector in which the entrants crowned and gobbled up dunes, sometimes even broken ones, and climbed to an altitude of close to 400 masl. On this power hike, competitors were expected to bring their A game from the beginning, much like young biker Daniel Sanders (see Stat of the day) and the evergreen Nasser Al-Attiyah, primed for victory by a bountiful 2021 season. The caravan then headed north-east for a 614 km liaison to Ha'il, where the grand start podium awaited the participants for tomorrow's stage 1B on a loop course.
After the overnight rain over Ha'il and northern Saudi Arabia, mist enveloped the area as the first competitors departed the bivouac in the wee hours. The programme gave pride of place to sand amid mountains reaching up to 1,500 masl and famous around the globe for their rock art. While there were parts with stones, sandy tracks made up 85% of the special, including 4% of dunes. Transposed to the 333 km timed sector, these figures packed a real punch! As David Castera had underlined at the previous day's briefing, the competitors had to be ready for the chips to come down. Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz can only agree (see A crushing blow). The two Audi stars got a rude awakening.
The contrast between the prologue on the beach and the first stage of the 2023 Dakar could not be starker. Today's special followed the outline of the coast from 30 km inland on its way to Yanbu and beyond. The entire field was on high alert in the first part of the 368 km course, featuring the scattered rocky sections where Sam Sunderland crashed out of the race. From there on, the faster stretches between valleys and sandy tracks enabled Carlos Sainz and Daniel Sanders to let their raw speed do the talking. As a reward for their efforts, the drivers, riders and crews are taking the coastal route back to the Sea Camp for more than 200 km.
After leaving the Sea Camp where the Dakar had been based for a long weekend, the riders, drivers and crews headed into the inner reaches of Saudi Arabia, where they were confronted with the morning coolness and terrain that was still damp.
