What a mess … feels like they had all these loose ends to tie up so they squeezed it all in. The season doesn't make sense at all, and only finds humour occasionally.
The first half of S2 is an incoherent mess of storylines mashed together.
In one episode it's Dagmar trying to kill Bean, in another one it's some story of Odval and the council doing their secret overthrowing the monarchy thing, in yet another one it's Zog going insane, next it's some Puppets and some other stuff as well, like that side story about Merkimer. Next episode, new adventure, that means, whatever happened last time is irrelevant now. Everything about this seems arbitrary and pointless.
There have been good episodes in between like the ones with Mora and, surprisingly, Oona. We got to see Steamland, also which is nice. If my memory serves me right it was mentioned some time earlier in the series. But it never goes anywhere because new episode, new adventure. There have been new characters introduced, that are adding to the series, too. Sometimes information does carry over to the next episodes or some information is hidden in plain sight that gets important/relevant later, but far too often that is not the case.
However, the first half feels like filler after filler after filler episode. The second half is a lot better, but still suffers regularly with these one-off episodes that do nothing to the overall story. Bean has some kind of superpowers (that's probably why Dagmar is after her but no one ever asks questions here) but we won't dive into anything of this until we get to the close of the season (after 17/18 episodes no less) to end on a high note to an otherwise overall very mediocre season. The entire two parts of this season are basically a waste in terms of the story the first two parts set out to tell. Rather, a lot more stuff was thrown into the mix without any clear direction in the greater scheme of things. On several occasions I had the feeling, jokes were going on for far too long on purpose as well but without any good punchline to it. These were really annoying.
While I enjoyed it overall despite its numerous shortcomings, it is clearly a worse season than S1 and needs to step it up to come to a worthwhile and satisfying conclusion in its next and supposedly final season. Given how these 20 episodes played out, I am not too sad about that. Rather end before it gets worse.
my God they really drag story lines out and take them round in circles. King Zog's madness is just exhausting. So is Odval's quest to overthrow him. Season 2 feels like watching a telenovela.
What an unexpected end to this first part of the season, it only remains for Bean to visit heaven, although apparently she will be the queen of hell
