Hadn't read the webcomic, am enjoying the show so recommend it - with the caveat that it may not be what you were hoping for if you are already a fan (plus ca change, hey?)Anyway, I'm off to drink a mild poison and watch the latest episode :D
Well, that's me sold after only one episode! Really enjoyed this, hope it is the beginning of multiple seasons.
Milly Alcock had an easier job than Emily Carey in making her character one the audience would root for - as it's clearly been written in that way - but Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra has put me right off her (despite her remaining the more obviously sympathetic character on paper, that doesn't translate to screen at all).
Conversely, whilst Emily Carey's Alicent was a bit of a damp squib, (but was obviously written that way, so no fault of the actor's), Olivia Cooke has managed to imbue what is now a rather unpleasant woman (on paper) with enough nuance and depth that one can't help but feel for her a bit.
Ideally, I'd have Milly Alcock and Olivia Cooke in their respective roles from the very beginning and stuff this half-way cast-change nonsense - if it's OK to portray the young Rhaenyra copping-off with her much older Uncle, surely we could live with her having a female friend a few years older than herself?
I can't even console myself with the hope that Rhaenyra gets killed off soon, (saving us all from having to endure any more D'Arcy screentime), as that'd make for a very short story - so it looks like we're stuck with a lead who appears to have undergone a thorough charisma-removal for the foreseeable. Ugh.
Began watching this thinking the whole season had been released - I've just watched episode 6 and find I've been cut off for whole week!
Aaaaarrrgh!
And now I'm going to have to wait another week between each of the last few episodes!
Gaaaaahhh!
So frustrating because this show is absolutely brilliant. (And I have no patience).
I'm a fan of Sharon Horgan and her dark, slightly twisted, but utterly relatable humour anyway, but occasionally she misses the mark slightly...
This is not one of those times.
I mean, I love 'Catastrophe' (to my mind, her best previous project), but this is even better - and that's a pretty high bar.
We begin by knowing what happens at the end, but - in a manner similar to the play 'Equus' (except with laughs) - the mystery that hooks us in is finding out how it happens.
Well - I'm hooked anyway! Next week sure feels like an awful long time away now, boooo.... I will have to console myself with re-watching 'Catastrophe' again, in the meantime, for a dose of Horgan-methadone.
Having said that, every one of the female leads in this is spectacular, and "The Prick" is absolutely marvellous in making the viewer immediately despise this slimy sadist.
Bravo all round!
Absolutely outstanding! First rate spy mystery/thriller, full of nail-biting tension punctuated by whip-smart dialogue with darkly sarcastic humour - the latter mostly c/o Oldman's understatedly spectacular Jackson Lamb. So good that I'm about to buy the book(s) by Mick Herron that the series is drawn from.
