The Mandalorian started out OK, but ended up as some half-baked, lazily written show that exist merely to lure parents to justify a Disney+ subscription. Kids get the usual Disney contents, moms get Baby Yoda, dads get Star Wars nerdy reference. The show almost feels like being made by a bunch of fanfiction writers with familiarity of the setting but zero sense of screen writing.
Nothing wrong with liking it, it's just the show appears to be all style and no substance.
Storyline shows no complexity at all. In fact, most of them are fillers. You can skip 4 of 8 episodes and you'll still understand the story just fine. Characters are completely uninteresting. None of them are developed. None of them had nuances: protagonists are morally good heroes; antagonists are one dimensional evils. The show relies only on a cute muppet and flashy action, but has zero substance. Had a potential great world-building with some details, but they chose to abandon it for rule of cool (and cute).
The "it's Star Wars, so it'll be simple" excuse commonly said by the series' defenders doesn't hold up if you actually consider other Star Wars titles such as Knights of the Old Republic, Republic Commando, Jedi Academy, Thrawn trilogy, the original and Tartakovsky's Clone Wars, and so on. Those titles are known for having remarkable storytelling; something that The Mandalorian doesn't have for its poverty of creative vision.
It tries to spin too many plates, and it fails in every sense of the word.
Just for comparison, take a look at Wandavision.
That show consists of 2 storylines, namely inside of Westview and outside of Westview, and both of those storylines belong to the same plot.
Then take a look at this show:
- There’s the stuff with Karli and the flag smashers
- Then there’s all the stuff with John Walker and his storyline as replacement Cap
- It also wants to act as a Civil War sequel by picking up Zemo’s storyline and the Wakandans chasing after him.
- Let’s not forget about Sharon Carter and the stuff in Madripoor
- Oh yeah, there’s also a very ham-fisted and tacked on plotline regarding how Cap was supposed to be black
- And finally you have all of the personal stuff of Sam and Bucky, which also includes the therapist and Sam’s sister
I dare anyone to summarize the plot of this show in a few sentences, you simply won’t be able to because it’s so incoherent.
That’s not even to mention how dumb and poorly thought out this show as a whole is.
It wouldn’t be such a problem if it took itself less seriously, but no, it wants to make a point about how world leaders aren’t uniting us. It wants to talk about what it means to be black in America.
Do I need to remind anyone: this is a show where our 2 ‘heroes’ broke a criminal mastermind out of prison in return for ... intel.
It’s a show that thinks it’s morally justified to have the protagonist throw terrorists out of planes, and then have that exact same character confront someone else about the implications of killing.
And so on, and so on, even to the smallest things.
There’s this scene in the final episode, where a random UN employee just hands Bucky her phone and she’s like: “here’s Karli, she wants to talk to you”. Like, how did she get that phone number? Why didn’t you just write a direct confrontation between Karli and Bucky? They were already in the same building.
There are two things that keep it watchable: Kari Skogland’s direction is very good (loved the first action set piece) and the acting, for the most part, is solid. Erin Kellyman is by far the weakest link, and she lacks any kind of real presence as a terrorist leader. Wyatt Russell, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan do a lot of the heavy lifting, and I can’t wait to see where they take those characters next.
4/10
Binged this in a day and yes it ends with a cliffhanger.
Mostly enjoyed it. Sometimes there are pacing issues and occasionally the acting was a little bit lackluster.
Currently halfway through and I just want to tell everybody already: Go check this out!!!
Edit: Just finished it. It's truly a remarkable series!
Beautiful CGI images, although the keen eye might occasionally spot some glitches and errors, it was truly eye candy most of the time. The story ending feels like the show might be going for some kind of super/genius heroes team, but in a way that really makes you enthusiastic to see what more they are gonna do, after this epic first season story. Looking at the detective arc of the story, I incidentally saw Sherlock-genius schemes forming and was delighted to see this - although I missed much more than I could have thought - all came together in a marvelous way!
Also for the lovers of a good love story there is more than enough to enjoy. Containing numerous twists, brought in throughout the whole storyline. Giving you plenty enough of satisfaction, excitement and anticipation on this area...
There is plenty of more to find out than the above teasers, but then I would be actually spoiling a lot. Those are just some of the many reasons why you should watch it! ;-)
All concluded: A great new sci-fi hero story, with much more up its sleeve than you would expect!
Just finished the first two episodes (I seriously dislike episodic releases, I will probably wait until the whole season drops before I watch the rest). Initial impressions - interesting characters, great chemistry between Clint and Kate (they are perfect foils for each other), great fight scenes (they’ve given Kate the Black Widow’s signature move). Lots of action. Lots of fun. Love the dog. Based on the first two episodes, I’m giving this series an 8 (great) out of 10. [Superhero Action Adventure]
Honestly, how could this fail? Two of the fasted rising stars (Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Pugh), the weight of the Marvel Universe behind it (Kevin Feige’s vision and Marvel’s course corrections in balancing humour, action and superheroes) and the growing power of the television format to maximize storylines. This was another winner. The only holdbacks for me were the one toned performance of Jeremy Renner and the weakness of a credible threat. I give this series an 8 (great) out if 10. [Superhero Action Adventure]
It was kind of unexpected for me how much I enjoyed it. I had really low expectations (because Hawkeye), but I think this is one of my favorite MCU-shows thus far. It's not that big in scale, which helps a lot. The dynamic between Kate and Clint is great and Yelena is awesome. I just had fun with this, it has great humor most of the time. Nothing unexpected or stuff that made me fall of my chair laughing, but just a fun, action-packed show. Also, love the Christmas-setting; move aside Iron Man 3!
The actor who played Harry wasn't too bad. Having said that, this is disappointing if you're a fan of the novels. They changed a key character to be "ethnic" thus removing the humor in that character's appearance. I could go on. At least they didn't insist on putting a hat on Harry (fan joke). If you haven't read the novels and would like to, be aware that the show does have plot spoilers.
It started OK, it's going down hill .... but who cares The Expanse is back on today!!!!!!!!!!!!
love the movies. hate the show.
lots of travel. lots of shooting. lots of aliens. lots of great cgi.
zero talk. zero depth. zero emotion.
zero suspense.
heck it's even worse than syfy's killjoys, dark matter & defiance...
Season 1 I really enjoyed. Season 2 just a little less but wanted to finish off the story. Season 3 ... It took 3-4 sittings for me to finish episode 1, and I can't bring myself to keep going. When I consider watching, I instead find myself on YouTube or Twitch looking for something else.
You had to extend the main story arc into 5 seasons or something. But you ended it in last season, now trying to start it from all over again? new tattoes? seriously? No, it just feels forced now, everything, scenario, acting, everything. Done with this show, ill try to remember this as a 2 seasons tv series.
the best stargate series IMO
Justified is some of the best, most original and witty television you will ever see.
Absolutely fantastic, certainly my favorite currently airing TV show - great acting, plots, drama, and wit. I'd say it gets better as it goes on, but that's not to say it goes from bland to great, it goes from great to amazing.
"Well, well if it isn't Raylan Givens." You'll hear this about 10,000 times more.
How awesome it would've been if she had taken over the daily show instead... now can we have this daily as compensation as well? Thanks!
