I get why the critics gave it the positive reviews they did; the cinematography was outstanding and the direction and performances were all very good. I enjoyed it a great deal for those reasons. However, I also get why much of the viewing audience was less positive about it (like the two friends I went with.) It is most definitely a slow burn, psychological horror film that lacks the in-your-face shock and/or gore moments common in the majority of contemporary horror films. It's also bound to leave you with more questions than answers (as one friend complained, "There's not enough info!") If you want to see an extremely well made film and aren't put off by films with a slower pace that demand a bit of imagination, I highly recommend it. Seriously, some of the camera work is breathtaking.
"You're gonna have a good time."
This is technically a crime drama but really it is a story about brotherly love. Robert Patterson is great in this. He really is showing how good an actor he is and trying to put the twilight movies behind him. The cinematography is fantastic too. A lot of extreme close ups make this feel much more personable. The neon colors used made some scenes really pop. The original score is amazing, builds tension really well. Very good movie and I definitely had a good time seeing it.
Wow. This movie is great. it is sick. It is disturbing. But also, it is great. Probably one of the best movies of this year, most definatley one of the top 10 candidates. But also so hard to describe without spoilering that I won't even get into it. Just this much: It's a movie about dark secrets, revenge, blackmail and some strange notion of justice.
The story is especially in the beginning, totally strange, and only after some time you'll start to understand who's who and what's happening. However, from the first moment on you get the notion of "something's not right", which is conveyed in so many ways - the dialogues, the way the people talk with each other, the strange relations they have. There is also some small symbolism to find, but not as much as with other movies of this kind, e.g. Nocturnal Animals.
The storytelling is absolutely great, the movie is totally atmospheric and unsettling from the first scene onwards - I mean, wow was that intro intense - classical music, church-themed, and the close up of an open beating hearth at an operating table - uncomfortably long, hard to look at, even harder to look away. Cut. Discarding of rubber gloves and the scrubs from the operation. Cut. Mundane dialogue of the two doctors that walk down a frightening and disturbing looking long corridor, with the camera being far away and moving in the same pace as the two doctors. Cut.
Especially the camera is also quite interesting - it doesn't matter which scene, which shot, which setting - somehow it is always frightening and unsettling. Wow. What great skill in this shootings. The soundtrack is also absolutely strange and uncomfortable - switching from the imperfect singing of a child that in its way is totally scary (see the trailers), to classical music to a soundtrack that is absolutely grotesque and that bears a lot of resemblance to the soundtrack of the Hannibal series.
The cast is great as well - we have Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman who are absolutely great - but the star is probably Berry Keoghan, who is creepy as hell.
After watching this movie you'll feel the urge to discuss it with other people and it'll keep you occupied for hours and days afterwards (at least if you are open to such thoughts about movies and their meanings) - and this is something that I love in movies - there are many ways a movie can be really good. But to be a great movie it'll have to keep me occupied with it. This one does, so it's already clear that I'll consider it to be a great movie. It is however not for everyone. I think it can be best categorized with movies such as Nocturnal Animals, Enemy or mother! - if you loved those, you'll probably also like this one. If you, however hated those, I don't see any chance for you liking this one.
A very boring movie and a total waste of time, avoid at all costs. 1/10
A biopic about a man called Percy who accomplished nothing of mention apart from abandoning his wife at every opportunity.
i was expecting to love this movie, but meh. kind of silly and over-acted, being shot with a machine gun dropping to the ground waving your legs in the air and then getting right back up sort of stuff. painful to watch at times - this is definitely not something i ever want to sit through again.
One of the rare "Based on a true story" movies that is actually quite accurate in it's depiction. I was worried that it might "Hollywood" up the story to gain more widespread appeal but it didn't.
If you have seen Citizen Four then the general idea of the movie will be familiar, however it runs Godfather 2 style flashbacks to give more details about how everything came to be and a more personal look into Snowden's life. Which was the only thing I missed from Citizen Four, so I'm glad they chose this was to tell the story.
Acting is fantastic all around and Joseph Gordon-Levitt absolutely nailed his role. I also liked that they didn't try to over-villainise anyone (except for one occasion that was a bit over the top) and more focused on that it was just a system that was out of control, with people just "following orders".
Bad on so many levels. Total dissapointment. Like series of MTV flicks with no composition, soundtracks everywhere, story no where, characters total crap. If there were no Will and Margot I would probably leave theatre! Sad day for DC comics!
My head is literally in pain from this film...I'm left feeling empty. If you asked me what I just witnessed in these past 2 hours, I honestly couldn't describe what took place. The entire thing felt like a bunch of messy jump-cut, foggy action sequences stacked up on top of eachother with NO character substance or plot to hold it together. The writing was terrible and insanely cliche, there was no depth, and absolutley nothing to be taken from watching this. Oh and in addition - the use of that soundtrack - terrible, sad such a good song like Heathens is even a part of the franchise. Wish they had spent more money building the storyline and chracters (WHO HAD PROMISE WITH THE RIGHT WRITING) than promoting the shell it became...
It's like a 90min long Key & Peele sketch, funny, well written, and deals with real issues in a light-hearted way.
I wish they would put English subtitles on the blue rays!
I was so ready for some fun and over-the-top horror stuff, but damn was I bored for 2/3rds of the film. The first part is a long introduction to the cast that I did not really care about at all. I might have if they were written with good character traits and interesting interaction, but all they did was say something really mediocre and done a thousand times. I maybe chuckled internally once or twice.
Then the violence started and I was hoping for it all to get much more entertaining. But, again, nope. It took the movie until the very end to show the cool look and design of the monsters, so we only get to experience those suckers briefly. And these parents are terrible. Hey, my son was snagged away from me. Oh well, I give up immediately.
I guess that sums me up. I gave up pretty quickly into the run time. Positive stuff though, would be the design for sure. Also, the animated sequence towards the end was great. But all in all, nothing made me feel like I was suddenly switched to interested.
Pretty sure its one of the shittiest movies ive ever seen, wasnt scary, wasnt funny, just sucked. Period. Not worth watching.
Eh. Thought there would be more action. This is just a joke of an action movie. Silly plot.
Holy shit!
I can't say that I understood the meaning of every single thing, theres to many symbolisms hiding in it and sometimes can be so bizarre! Above all it's a film about great performances.
I am sure that Holy Motors will definitely have an impact on you and at the end you can take your own interpretation of the story, if there's one...
Probably the worst movie I've ever seen.
Awesome!
Funny shit !
