3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’:

  1. Welcome back, Tim Burton and your wonderful wackiness!!! That’s how you double down on a classic, honor it, but give it new life and vibes in a new era. Bravo.

  2. Catherine O’Hara continues to be an absolute scene-stealing queen.

  3. Michael Keaton DIDN’T MISS A FRICKIN’ BEAT. Still Beetlejuice through and through.

Bonus Thought: Winona Ryder is such a treasure. To see her back as Lydia makes my soul so happy.

I really liked it. A fantastic, entertaining, funny production and all of them are very well blended. The actors are already legendary, the plot is incredible. I haven't watched this kind of movie for a long time. Definitely watch it. My favorite in this movie was BOB:joy: I would normally add it to my favorites but I stopped in between and then continued where I left off. Usually when I watch 2-hour movies that I love very much, it feels like it's over in 20 minutes. It wasn't like that in this one, but it really does justice to it in this movie. Thank you for your efforts.

A classic old-school Burton. He has thrown everything at the wall and then carefully sculpted.A creepy-elegant, funny cracked poetry.

Everyone and everything was great

I actually enjoyed it. They played it safe and didn’t take chances. I wouldn’t go out of your way to watch it though

Waited long for a sequel
A masterpiece

Much better than expected. Definitely stuck to its gonzo roots with off-the-wall humor, great visual effects, and gothic ways.

I could see someone who hasn't seen the original 1988 Beetlejuice or someone who only saw it recently not liking this one that much, but as both I and my husband saw the original back in the day all those decades ago and thus we getting the extra sprinkling of nostalgia on top, we really enjoyed this one.

The flaws in the movie, like e.g. some characters basically being completely wasted, just don't really matter that much. They're wasted, but they don't get enough screen time to drag the movie down, either, so it's kind of a wash, really, and otherwise the movie keeps up with the fun and doesn't really slow down at any point enough for you to let your hair down.

I was worried that this movie was going to do the usual cash grab sequel but that's not the case at all. It's classic Tim Burton, and matches a similar style to the original Beetlejuice. If you loved the first one, you'll love this one too. I do think the original is slightly better, if only for the fact that the sequel felt tied down in references and throwbacks to the original, making care to engage in nostalgia yet not tread on any fond memories. Definitely a movie I'll be rewatching many times.

It takes a little longer to find its grove than the original. Though that should be expected from most sequels. The movie is fun but some parts can be just weird or cringe.
BeetleJuice Beetlejuice is occasionally darker and more violent than the original too. With twists you might not see coming. It was nice to see a lot more of the underworld this time.
The movie just falls apart a little towards the end and starts to feel in a rush. To tie up loose ends.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Big fan of the original so I think it'll mostly be a hit for those of us with longer leashes for the outright silliness of this franchise. Could have used more Bellucci. Somewhat less accessible for my friends with photosensitivity. Lots of flashing lights in this one. Be warned. I did a lot of squinting.

Still, a triumphant return.

The musical scene using Dona Summer's MacArthur Park was awesome!!!

An enjoyable second helping of 'Beetlejuice'.

'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' isn't far adrift the original, even if I'd still rank the first film higher. I gotta say those behind this did a good job with the teaser trailer, I hadn't even seen the 1988 flick but that got my interest. Speaking of trailers, I'm glad they changed that cringey pilates instructor line for Astrid - right call!

Michael Keaton remains the best cast member, though Winona Ryder and newcomer Jenna Ortega are not far off. Willem Dafoe doesn't feature much but naturally still manages to be one of movie's strong points. Justin Theroux's character didn't really do anything for me, while Monica Bellucci feels a little underused but perhaps not; what we get from her as Delores is still decent and arguably enough.

Sounds like Tim Burton doesn't want to another sequel, which is probably for the best but if the studio wanted to go behind his back I, I'm afraid, would have to allow it on this occasion strictly for the obvious title possibility. Though I guess the ritual has already occurred with the two titles combined. Fairs.

Enjoyable trip down memory lane, I thought Winona and Keaton were great but not sure the amount of years passing between the first film and this one was warranted. The story was not the best and I'm sure they could have come up with this sooner?

loading replies

Sacrilegious to say, but I think this might be better than the original? But I do say that as someone that has zero nostalgia for this franchise. Keeps all the Tim Burton panache and zany antics, but brings modern production values and grandeur (shout out the Monica Bellucci introduction sequence). Some may argue that strips some of the quaint charm of its predecessor, and I'd agree the lack of film grain and overly clean presentation is a bit out of place, but the overall package on offer here is just more complete and well realised for me. Enough winking and nodding is done to the original while offering a pleasant extension to the nuggets of story left behind in the first entry, its by no means fantastic, but as another fun foray into the world of the dead, BB delivers.

loading replies

Its shocking to say that this is one of Burton's films to come out in the past 20 years (since Big Fish honestly). Using real sets and practicals makes a huge difference in the quality of this film. This was primarily focused on Jenna and Wyonna's characters, so beetlejuice is more of a plot moving secondary character honestly. This captures the spirit of the first film, while still progressing the story in a way that feels alright.

loading replies

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” remains so faithful to the spirit of the original that it ends up repeating all of its flaws—especially the overabundance of purposeless characters and the “plot” being resolved at the last minute with random twists. Visually, however, it’s nearly perfect. I wasn’t bored for a single second. Who would have thought that Burton needed a long-overdue sequel to regain some of his old spark? Let’s just hope there won’t be any more sequels. It’s been fun because it’s been a while, but I can’t see myself enjoying more of the same in a couple of years.

Is no one gonna talk about the dad being a public functionary since he didn't die in an accident but killed himself?

Totally batshit crazy, but a fun time.

I've been hoping for a sequel for so many years and have been looking forward to this film for so long, but unfortunately these days almost every film is spoiled by today's spoiled youth. These brats (as well as all Gen Z and Gen Alpha youth) only bring aggression and hate.

loading replies

I HATE these spoiled, disrespectful, aggressive youth of today, who only became like this because of your non-authoritarian upbringing. Children need to learn to have boundaries set again!

loading replies

A very decent sequel, it could have almost matched the original, had it not been for the paper thin plot and a very disappointing delivery by Winona Ryder, which reminded nothing of the younger version of her character. Michael Keaton is fresh in this as if not a single day has passed! In general pretty entertaining to watch, with a lot of homage to the first movie for the nostalgic ones, giving hope for a potential Burton revival era.

loading replies

this was my first movie in a 4dx theater and that bumps up my rating for multiple reasons BUT either way it was fun and silly just like the original

loading replies

This was a lot of fun, but a lot of it felt excruciatingly pointless.

It was nice to see Beetlejuice back, but I was hoping the reboot would be better—something less kid-friendly and more edgy targeted towards a more mature crowd.

"You're just my unpacked trauma. You're just my unpacked trauma."

Sequels are hard, legacy sequels are even harder. Unfortunately, B2 struggles to justify its existence.

It's not a disaster. The cast is all at the top of their game (aside from that bland af bad guy). And Burton's weirdness means that at least it's never really boring. But like... Why?

What new story is told here that wasn't told in the original? Other than: OK, let's do all that stuff again, but now it's about the next generation, and it's a little more sentimental than the first one. And instead of one shrunken head guy, we have a whole bunch of them.

I like Jenna Ortega as much as the next guy, but what's the point of her story exactly? Just because that's how legacy sequels are supposed to work?

I loved Monica Bellucci's character, but they they didn't really do anything with her. Would've loved to see more of her and less of milquetoast Karsten Runquist.

"I swear, the afterlife is so random!"

The movie was fun but didn't like how they solve the main plot points. I mean, Delores esentially don't interact with any character until the last 5 minutes and she is quickly disposed with a trick. Same thing with the Jeremy subplot or even Rory's one. I think Burton focused too much on easter eggs and nostalgia; but when he reached the point of rounding up the movie, he went blank. Still a good sequel, but no the best it could have been. For me its a 5, with an extra point for the practical effects which, even tho that they don't go along with current times, for the universe in the movie itself, works like a charm

In previously in 1988,Lydia defeat a Beetlejuice, eaten by a sandworm and finally she defeat again, she call him in three times then*Boom!* and banishes him then it's over..........

Movie #1535

I really wanted to love this, but it felt very convoluted. Mind, a lot of amazingly beautiful sets and practical effects that are amazing. But... too many elements that are haphazardly fit together... Too bad.

loading replies

Def weird. More of the musical styling than the og movie which I didn’t mind.

Although it was good and has a good start, then it seems like a remake of the original + more Wednesday series.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has its moments. Seeing the Ghost with the Most and other departeds in the dysfunctional afterlife will always amuse, but the sequel largely lacks the magic of the original. Some of the characters here are really bad, the narrative feels crowded, and the film feels too much like just a tug at nostalgia.

loading replies

I felt that this started well, then, as it went along, aggressively approached the middle. I really liked the idea of the three women leading this film, but the story was quite bland. They also made an incredibly odd choice in focusing so much of the plot on Charles Deetz. The actor who played him was convicted of being in possession of child pornography, and one would figure that they'd give him the character a nod, then move on. That wasn't the case at all. A significant portion of the movie focuses on him. What made it even stranger was the fact that neither Geena Davis nor Alec Baldwin came back for this film, and they gave them one passing mention and moved on.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) - :heart:5

This sequel was not as fun as it should have been.

The Beetlejuice character felt flat - his voice almost felt right - but his mannerisms and mugging completely missed the mark - I guess, he felt kind of broken.
Also, the story was overly complicated, but the best part of the movie was the end sequence.

How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!

Like instant Beetlejuice but they didn't have any water.

The film is little more than three half-hour sitcom plots frankensteined into a sequel-boot.

Thank god Jenna Ortega saves the show, and the absurd lengths they went to in order to literally cut Jeffrey Jones out of the film was cringe-larious!

I'm not a huge fan of the original, although I've seen it many times and it makes me nostalgic. This sequel is similar, it has lost its freshness and doesn't seem to expand the world created, but it's not bad. I've seen sequels to classics that are much worse, like the latest Ghostbusters.

Entertaining, it has a few minutes left over, but in the final part it picks up and I liked that some musical scenes were kept.

This was kind of a mess. The main problem with the movie is that it has some really great ideas and the potential to be a great movie/sequel but it wastes too much time focusing on plot points and things that aren’t very interesting and all the really great ideas and plot points that are set up feel completely rushed to very unsatisfying resolutions. Michael Keaton is easily the best part of the movie and he steals every scene he’s in. Catharine O’Hara is also always great and I’m glad she gets plenty of screen time. The set design and practical effects make this worth seeing on the big screen but there’s just not enough of it. Overall this was kind of disappointing.

loading replies

what a horrible movie ! I did not like it at all.

This sucked so hard, how do people like this

Oh dear. Not a patch on the original A soul less mess.

The Juice is flat. Colorful sets, eccentric characters, loud music, so over-the-top but somehow... dull. Doesn't have the energy or magic of the first. A collection of subplots stitched together into a directionless mess. It's trying so hard at everything. Unfunny comedy, I chuckled a few times whenever Willem DaFoe was on-screen or when we see some fun waiting room costumes but that's it. Not sure what to think of the performances, it's like they're intentionally playing it cheap and cheesy. It's honestly hard to tell what was practical and what wasn't, I see a lot of CGI hidden everywhere but i'm probably wrong (will be waiting for a making of). Most of it is clearly practical effects though and I applaude that. The stop-motion segment was nice but very short and didn't feel fluid with the rest of the movie. Not sure what to think of all the similarities with The Addams Family. Overall just a huge miss for me.

I gotta be honest, it was kinda weird how they kept glorifying the pedo-guy actor instead of just dismissing his character with a simple one-liner.

Lydia being in a relationship with this idiot man completely destroyed her character for me as well, idiot by association.

Unfortunately Jenny Ortega has been reduced to playing the emo idiot as well. Immediately duped into doing the most insane thing without a hint of brain usage.

Bored to death. I am not smiling, I am not laughing, I am not crying, I am not intrigued, I am not scared, I am not pumped. I felt void watching this movie. I'm wondering why people put so much effort into creating such a movie. Maybe I'm the wrong audience.

UTTER GARBAGE.! This has got to be the worst film of the year so far, story-line was rubbish, acting was rubbish, action was rubbish and the comedy is none existent :thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

loading replies

First thought: yeah, Keaton and Winona. Awesome.
Second thought: Ortega. Meh. Not getting the hype around her.

loading replies

Terrible, too many situations to focus on, the movie is based outside of the haunted house and the beyond.

Story focuses on Jenna Ortega than BettleJuice or his ex wife, which would’ve been great. But sadly we saw snippets of the ex wife and then all of a sudden she get eaten by the sandstorm at the end.

loading replies

If I had to use one word to describe this movie....

BAD!!!!

I turned it off with 10 minutes to go lol

Never should have been made. Tim Burton has certainly lost his touch in his old age.... no more innocent sequels please sir.

loading replies

awesome movie I I have seen

loading replies

The movie is okay, but nothing more. I understand it’s challenging to make a sequel to such an iconic movie, but BB falls short more than it should. It relies too heavily on sentimental moments from the original instead of standing on its own story. For example, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire handled this better. Also, I’m not a big fan of Jenna Ortega. I didn’t like her in The Addams Family show, and I feel the same here, for me she looks misplaced in these roles

loading replies

Wasn't a big fan of the first one and I thought this one was just okay as well.

Some fun moments, like the soul train, but I never really got invested in the story or the characters.

I also didn't like the ending, could have been so beautiful! And Monica Bellucci should have had more scenes! I wasn't aware she and Burton are an item these days, I thought he was still with Helena Bonham Carter wololo

loading replies

A shaky start but gets more confidence as it works towards its conclusion. Keaton is having the most fun, Ortega is a welcome goth princess to join Ryder’s timeless original performance. Great comedy from Dafoe and Theroux, I only wish there would have been some more time for Bellucci, criminally underused.

Grosser and slightly more dangerous (f bombs!) than I would have expected from WB in 2024, bless them for letting Burton be Burton.
