Probably more mindblowing for an American audience that barely gets any exposure to this kind of material from its own industry. For my taste, Guadagnino plays it way too safe. I was waiting for it to push beyond the melodrama into something more wild or messed up, and I never really got that. He's constantly flexing with impressive camerawork, great editing and a fantastic score, but what is it all in service of? There's not a lot more to this than very basic melodrama. Tennis is used a metaphor for innuendo and relationships, which becomes a bit eye-rolling as the film goes along. On top of that it's not nearly as sexy as some people are suggesting, it feels like a lot of foreplay and innuendo without a real pay-off at any point. His camera doesn't shy away from nudity or sweat, and Trent Reznor's score puts in a lot of work in turning up the heat, but you want it to push beyond that at some point. For me it doesn't really develop into anything surprising and the conclusion it ultimately goes with feels kinda lame because of it. Still, it does a good job at intriguing you with the personal struggles of the three main characters, all of which are well portrayed by the actors. Zendaya is a bit hard to read at times, though it could be intentional with the character she's playing. There's enough merit to the complexity of the characters and technical aspects that kept me from being bored, but the entire time I kept thinking about how much more interesting this could be with someone like Paul Verhoeven at the helm.
6/10
This felt like a low-grade version of Little Women. Every single thing about the movie – script, acting, production, etc – felt like it was off. It also marks the first time that I don’t like Bill Nighy in a movie.

Far from well-written, guilty of instalove, yet strangely entertaining. I probably like the 90s comedy aesthetics (and Brendan Fraser) a little too much.
we need a good Persuasion adaptation, please! Also all those "artistic" and shaky camera shots were annoying, not quirky. sorry.
i can't believe this movie only has a 68% rating it's literally the best movie of all time
So hard to watch. Raw, painful. Seeing such a star having those moments with a disease without so little to do is truly heartbreaking. Celine will always be a star. I hope she get better soon! A much watch for everyone.
Clooney's film is nostalgic for the past but did it have to be so dull? Disappointing.
I can appreciate the stunning visuals and the dark comedy that this film offers but the appreciation for this film completely escapes me. It's a long, long, long way to go to see the fairly uninteresting story play out. I won't get that three hours of my life back.

i had to watch this movie every fucking day when i was dropped off for grade school. this movie will never leave me. if i die and come back as a ghost, ill just float around whispering quotes from this childhood nightmare im stuck in for the rest of my life.
This film should have stayed in the shadows. It's a boring tale that strains for significance, but in my opinion, falls a long way short.
In an era when original films are few and far in-between I thought The Invention of Lying was actually a pretty decently good film. Sure as a comedy it wasn't really hilarious but it had a good plot that was interesting and heartwarming and an excellent cast as well.
It was a pretty good idea, execution was okay, gave me a decent laughter. Would recommend, but don't expect an amazing movie.
There's a lot of awkward dead air in this movie. Finishing it felt like a chore. Persuasion is not that compelling of a story to begin with and this adaptation definitely didn't help. And I'm REALLY sorry, but they couldn't have chosen a worse actor to play Captain Wentworth. I almost hoped they'd do a twist and have her end up with Mr. Elliot instead. (also Henry Golding IS a 10.) The only positive thing I can think of is Dakota's english accent not being distracting.
My favourite movie. I have watched it countless times.
