6x01 Doctor Reacts To House MD | Girl Who Can’t Feel Pain

  • 2022-01-03T01:00:00Z10m

Dr. Gregory House MD might be a genius doctor, but he’s a bit extreme to say the least. In “Insensitive”, Season 3 Episode 14, he encounters a patient suffering from CIPA, or Congenital Insensitivity to Pain. This is naturally interesting to House, because of his chronic pain issues, so he dives in to study this young patient’s body and learn her secrets in an attempt to better understand his own condition… but not before discovering she’s been siphoning off her Vitamin B12 to a 25 foot long tape worm. Yikes. Today we look at the unethical and downright torturous methods House and his staff used to treat this girl, as well as discuss the effects a tapeworm can have on your body.

6x02 Doctor Mike Reads Thirst Tweets

  • 2022-01-06T01:00:00Z10m

I’ve heard your cries for a thirst tweets video, but always felt a little weird about reading those messages. So, I invited my sick and twisted friend, Pam, over to read them for me. Pam is a speaker, comedian, disability advocate, and certified sicko so she had no problem diving into these tweets and embracing the strangest ones. Surprise, even though there was a lot of silliness in here, we also found a way to discuss premature ventricular contractions, vitamin D supplements, serotonin, broken ribs, polydipsia, flu shots, prostate exams, and chest compressions. Thanks to Buzzfeed for this concept and all of you on Twitter who sent these in!

In 2013, news outlets around the world began spreading a story that caused everyone to do a double take: teenagers in Japanese had begun licking each other’s eyeballs for… fun. It wasn’t just a few weird kids though, as Japan became backlogged with cases of pink eye spreading throughout the youth. Doctors were interviewed about potential spread of chlamydia and eventual blindness. As it turns out, this story was far more distressing than it seemed, because none of it, not a single detail, was true.

6x04 Doctor Reacts To Osmosis Jones

  • 2022-01-13T01:00:00Z10m

Osmosis Jones is an animated movie from 2001 starring Chris Rock as the titular white blood cell responsible for capturing viruses inside of Bill Murray's body. I remember seeing this as a kid and loving it, but I haven't taken another look at it since I went to medical school, so I was exciting to open it back up and check its accuracy. The jokes in here are so funny, but some of the medical elements are a little weak. Let me know down below if you think I should check out the TV series, Ozzy and Drix!

Today I answer your questions about getting slapped, the leg version of your armpit, the truth about stepping on a crack and breaking your mommas back, the REM cycle, my next tattoo, chopsticks, dreams, lemons causing weight loss, breaking bones, CPR, protein and bodybuilding, cold weather causing colds, sodium intake, getting light headed, and high blood pressure. Leave your questions down below!

6x06 Medical Heads-Up With KallMeKris

  • 2022-01-21T01:00:00Z10m

Kall Me Kris Collins and Pamela Rae Schuller are two of my funniest friends, so I thought it'd be fun if the three of us played Ellen's favorite game, Heads Up: Medical Edition. What happened next was... well... you'll just have to watch and find out, because this got out of control. My stomach actually hurt from laughing after this game. Together the three of us tried to give clues and get the others to guess things like pregnancy, enemas, anxiety, and all sorts of other medical terms. We had so much fun that we can't wait to play another game together, so which one should it be? Let me know down below!

I've reacted to a lot of episodes of Grey's Anatomy on this channel, and am often compared to Dr. Derek Sheppard (because we both have dark hair, or something), so it only makes sense that now I react to his final episode as a regular character on Grey's Anatomy, Season 11 Episode 21, How To Save A Life. This one was packed with medical information that was fun to break down, but also quite emotional. Today we talk about trauma injuries from car accidents, dislocated bones and hips, stomach lacerations, the need for CT scans, punctured lungs, checking your pulse, being on call, appropriate behavior during surgery, and end of life care.

Recently I was shooting some videos with my team and casually mentioned that apple seeds contained cyanide. The guys were blown away by this and had no idea that eating a high volume of crushed apple seeds could be poisonous, so it got me thinking, what other unexpected foods pose dangers to your health if not prepared properly? Today we talk about the risks of apple seeds, puffer fish or fugu, raw cashews, potato eyes and green potatoes, lychee, elderberries, rhubarb, red kidney beans, castor oil seeds or beans, and nutmeg. There are proper ways to grow and prepare all of these foods to reduce the risk of complications, so make sure you’re always aware of where your food comes from and how it’s made! Did any of these surprise you?

Kickstarter, Indiegogo, GoFundMe, and so many other crowdfunding sites are full of fitness and health related products, but whether they are reliable and healthy is anyone’s guess until you actually get these items in your hands. Well that’s where I come in, because I nabbed a bunch of the most funded health-related products from Kickstarter and I’m here to give them my seal of approval… or disapproval. Have you tried any of these? Let me know down in the comments which ones work or you want to try!

5 Minute Crafts is one of the most successful channels on YouTube, highlighting tips and tricks to improve small parts of your every day life. Over the years they’ve made a few videos about first aid and health hacks that I couldn’t let slide. Some of this is so painful to watch and unnecessary. Today we talk about the many uses for tampons, giving children medicine and shots, activated charcoal as toothpaste, the multi faceted possibilities of normal toothpaste, coca cola, a ton of remedies for scrapes, and other tricks that Five Minute Crafts really think are necessary. Have you tried any of these? Did they work for you?

Freaky Eaters is a TLC show that highlights individuals who have unusual diets, very similar to My Strange Addiction. Often this means people who exclusively eat one thing, such as potatoes, cheese, meat, bread, burnt sausage, and many others. There are also episodes depicting a woman who drinks upwards of 30 Coca Cola’s a day, a man who eats raw chicken and meat, or a man who just eats cheeseburgers. I take a look at all of these cases today to discuss two things: what the impact of these diets are on the human body, and what tactics the show’s producers and medical experts use to help these people. As always, let’s lead with empathy in trying to understand where these individuals are coming from and we can all improve our diets to live happier and healthier!

Ned Fulmer from The Try Guys had surgery on his knee a while back, so today I'm taking a look at the video he did about it to throw my medical hat into the ring. There was a lot to break down here, such as Ned's opioid use, the mechanism of injury playing paintball, the actual surgery, and his long road to recovery. His meniscus tear was particularly serious, and his leg turning green concerned me a lot! Congratulations to Ned on overcoming this obstacle, I think we can see your post-traumatic growth! I'm a big fan of the Try Guys, so which video of there's should I react to next? Birth pain simulator, Zach's chronic pain, something else? Let me know!

I realized that I’ve been lucky enough to travel to a couple dozen countries around the world, so I thought it would be fun to tell one short story about every place that I’ve been. I’ve got some funny stories, such as the time be and my girlfriend got in trouble on a trampoline in the ocean, or scary stories such as a man almost losing his life in an airplane or the time we were targeted for a kidnapping in Israel. In total I’ve visited Portugal, China, Costa Rica, Hungary, Turks and Caicos, Canada, France, Jamaica, Mexico, The Dominican Republican, Monaco, Panama, El Salvador, Austria, Anguilla, The Bahamas, Switzerland, Aruba, the UK, Germany, and of course Russia and the US. Have you ever visited any of these countries? Share your travel stories down below!

I can't believe we've already hit our 20th episode of Doctor Reacts To Medical Memes. I love reacting to these memes and I'm always so happy that we continue to find new ones that allow for some education to come along with the laughs. Today we talk about botox, pregnancy, baby food, caffeine, carpal tunnel syndrome, staff and PPE shortages, circadian rhythms, doing surgery outside like The Simpsons, insulin, tanning beds, skin cancer, nasal congestion, cramming for tests in med school, biochemistry, study tips, big pharma, oxytocin, bee allergies, epipens, cold medicine, night shifts, Dwayne The Rock Johnson, hearing aids, and as always... CHEST COMPRESSIONS CHEST COMPRESSIONS CHEST COMPRESSIONS.

Zach Kornfeld from The Try Guys suffers from an autoimmune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis. I realize it's a mouthful, so today I decided to react to a couple videos Zach as posted on the Try Guys channel as well as back on the Buzzfeed channel about his medical journey dealing with chronic pain, his experience with the medical system, and the reality of living with the disease to this day. We also discuss inflammation, Scoliosis, MRIs, Humira, physical therapy, Are there any other Try Guys videos you'd like me to react to? Let me know down in the comments if Ned, Eugene, Keith, or Zach has done anything else you'd like me to talk about!

6x16 TikToks That INFURIATE Doctors

  • 2022-02-24T01:00:00Z10m

In this video we take a look at some tiktoks that make me question my future in medicine. Well, not really, but it feels like that. Today we talk about babies, stepping on legos, viagra, inflatable water sports, trampolines, cats, basketball, boxing, head trauma, kickboxing, glass shards, vaginal steaming, the Liver King, foods that make you shorter, weight loss tips, papaya seeds, prescriptions, newfoundland dogs, ectopic pregnancy, incisional hernia, hyperbaric chambers, bone marrow, raw liver, EMF (electro magnetic fields) and of course CHEST COMPRESSIONS CHEST COMPRESSIONS CHEST COMPRESSIONS!

Food waste is a huge problem affecting America, but there are many steps we can take to change that! Turns out there are lots of food we choose to only eat certain parts of, and we wind up throwing away highly nutritious and tasty food parts because we were taught not to eat them. Today we look at the benefits and uses of “scraps” like banana peels, watermelon rinds, strawberry stems, orange rinds, pith, onion skins, liver, broccoli stalks, beef heart, carrot tops, pineapple cores, veal tongue, beat greens, cucumber peels, kiwi skins, tripe or animal stomach, and the risk of cherry pits! Have you tried any of these foods before?

Rocky is one of the most iconic movies of all time. Along with winning best picture for new-coming writer, director, and actor, Sylvester Stallone, in 1976, the film inspired 5 sequels and the spinoff film series “Creed” starring Michael B. Jordan. As an up and coming boxer myself, I thought I’d take a look at the work of Rocky Balboa to see if he included medical accuracy in his boxing epic based out of Philadelphia. Carl Weathers playing Apollo Creed, Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago… not to mention Mickey, Adrian, Paulie, and so many other characters come into play here as we look at the injuries Rocky sustained and delivered. Specifically we look into broken hands, broken noses, broken ribs, brain trauma and CTE, drinking raw eggs, using raw meat as punching bags, running stairs, “cut-men” steroids, blood doping, hematomas, chasing a chicken for speed training, banning boxing, Cavum Septum Pellucidum, Which Rocky movie is your favorite?

These SNL medical sketches killed me. Today we talk about giving birth with Amy Schumer, John Green's The Fault In Our Stars and Ebola Virus with Sarah Silverman, testicular injuries, sneezing with Kristin Wiig and Will Ferrell, dayquil, nyquil, advil, benadryl, STD's and STI's with Pete Davidson, IBS or irritable bowel syndrome, Gen Z hospital with Elon Musk, Are there any other Saturday Night Live medical sketches I should check out?

The Try Guys has made a ton of health videos, and I've reacted to a couple of them so far. Ned Fulmer getting knee surgery and battling with opioids, Zach Kronfeld's chronic pain journey... both excellent videos that have helped educate millions of people about health. The Try Guys haven't just explored personal health sagas though. They've also gotten prostate exams, delivered babies, and endured the true pain of birth by wearing a birth pain simulator. Today I look at those three examples as Ned, Eugene, Keith, and Zach continue to try everything on Earth for our entertainment, and education! Today we also talk about skin cancer, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer, epidurals, c-sections, the uterus, how to nurse a newborn child, and everything pregnancy.

Amanda Serrano is one of the greatest fighters of all time, and her contributions to the sport of Women's Boxing can't be understated. Yes, she has won a heck of a lot of fights and has more talent in her pinky than I ever will, but her pushes to make women's boxing equal to men's is historic and her impact will be felt for all future generations in the sport. She's got the biggest fight of her life coming up on April 30th, when for the first time in history 2 women will headline a fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City when she takes on undefeated Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Taylor. I've been lucky enough to train with Ryan Garcia and now share a sparring session with Amanda in Staten Island as I prepare for my upcoming boxing debut. She showed me a thing or two and I even landed a couple hits on her. What an unforgettable day. Make sure to check out Serrano vs. Taylor on April 30th!

The Onion is one of the smartest and funniest voices out there, so I once again reacted to a bunch of their medical headlines and articles. Today we talk about the CDC, ribs, sumo wrestling, Jimmy Carter, boxing gloves, surgery, sports injuries, morticians, zombies, Dr. Scholl’s, opioids, crossfit, babies, my strange addiction, fetuses, kid’s toys, doctors without borders, aliens, Elon Musk, HIPAA, smallpox, rinderpest, psoas muscles, billboards, conor mcgregor, shapewear, spanx, goop, gwenyth paltrow, cryosleep, and detox teas.

TikTok is full of all kinds of nutritional information... and some of it is even good! Today we look at mac and cheese, eating hot foods, John McGinnis, raw honey ASMR, Garnicia Cambogia, Dr. Oz, In-N-Out Burger, french fries, protein, carbs, juice cleanses, mountain lions, Nikocado Avocado, opium, codeine, essential oils, Matt Stonie, Squid Game, marshmallows, processed food, whole foods, Gordon Ramsey, vegan steak, magnesium, sleep, alkaline water, tap water, Liver King, raw meat, and liver!

Troom Troom is one of the cringiest YouTube channels I’ve ever seen, and their medical advice/first aid hacks are wildly inaccurate. Today we talk about sneezing, headaches, bruises, snake bites, cauterizing wounds, motion sickness, tampons, pads, hiccups, choking, smelly feet, water in your ears, heartburn, and a ton of other stuff. I never thought I’d see a channel with more weird claims than Five Minute Crafts or Bright Side, but here we are. Which hacks should I react to next?

I was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States when I was 6 years old. My parents wanted to give me and my sister a better life, and despite taking the incredible risk of moving to America without speaking a word of English, they were successful. I'll forever be grateful to my parents for what they did for us. That being said, as someone who still has family in both Russia and Ukraine, we have been struggling through a variety of emotions as so many Ukrainians and Russians suffer because of this war.

Manny MUA is a YouTuber, make up artist, and my long lost brother? Well that’s what twitter things anyway. Today I invited Manny to the studio to see if his vast make up knowledge dipped into the world of medicine, and I’m proud to say he knows his stuff. I asked him several controversial questions about make up as it relates to your health. Today we talk about sleeping with your make up on, toxic lipstick, toxic nail polish, children/teen make up use, healthier vs. unhealthier make ups, SPF in your make up, anti-aging wrinkle cremes, washing your brushes, restoring your expired mascara, expired make up, using your fingers instead of a brush, and moisturizer on oily skin. Let me know down below if you have any more make up questions we can answer!

I loved reading the Guinness World Records books as a kid, and now I'm taking a look at them through a medical lens. I couldn't believe some of the things I saw in this video. We talked about the world's tallest man, the largest mouth gape, the shortest woman, the most joints cracked consecutively, the thinnest waist, highest and lowest notes ever sang, the oldest woman, the longest plank, longest nose, and most cups stuck to a head, among other things! Which did you find the most incredible?

Harry Potter is one of the biggest book and film franchises of all time, and over the course of such a long story, you better believe I found some medical scenes to react to. We look at scenes from The Sorcerer’s Stone (The Philosopher’s Stone for my UK friends), The Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of Azkaban, The Goblet of Fire, The Order Of The Phoenix, The Half Blood Prince, and The Deathly Hallows. Between Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, Snape, Dumbledore, Dobby, Belatrix, Malfoy, Neville, and Voldemort himself, there was plenty of medical criticism to go around. Specifically we talk about Harry’s scar, Z-plasty, salmonella, broken wrists, concussions, trauma, quidditch accidents, broom falls, Phoenix tears, gillyweed, holding your breath, the bends, bleeding out, vaping, drawing blood, chest compressions, and even splinching! Are there any scenes you think I missed from JK Rowling’s epic?

My Strange Addiction is a very controversial show, but I think it serves as a learning opportunity. Remember, while some of these addictions are presented sensationally and humorously, let’s try to lead with empathy and understand some of these conditions can actually be life threatening. Today we talk about coffee enemas, eating cat hair, cat grooming, bezoars, eating ashes, objectophilia, animism, butt injections, Brazilian butt lifts (BBL, starring our friend Dr. Anthony Youn!), bee stings, yellow jackets, wasps, treatment for chronic pain, super glue, air freshener, drinking aerosol sprays, cremains, and endorphins. Let me know down below if there are any more addictions you’d like me to take a look at.

A fresh crop of memes have been harvested! Today we discuss croissants, cross fit, appendectomies, exercise, sore throats, essential oils, trans fats, stethoscopes, med school, parachutes, back pain, sneezing, herniated disks, Spongebob, fruit, sugar, yoga, acupuncture, boxing training, eyesight, q-tips, pierced nipples, heartbeats and pain scales!

The Try Guys are going to die! ....someday. And while that might be alarming, relax, so will you. It's normal! The Try Guys did take things a step further though, enlisting the help of a medical team and series of tests to determine not only who has the healthiest lifestyle, but to predict who will die first and live the longest. I've got to say, I have some very mixed feelings about these types of test, as there are so many variables in what leads to a long and healthy life that a test simply doesn't take into consideration, but it's a fun exercise to explore nonetheless. Today we hit on a bunch of subjects, such as Ned Fulmer having a baby with his wife and becoming a dad, Keith Habersberger's diet after eating the whole menu, Eugene Lee Yang's alcohol intake, and Zach Kornfeld's STI concerns, among many other things. Cancer risk, moderate intensity exercise, blood pressure, BRCA1, sleep, stress, and so much more all in today's video!

House M.D., Season 3 Episode 4 "Line In The Sand" is a wild one. The story centers around a child who lives with Autism Spectrum Disorder who started screaming out of nowhere. Obviously House experiments on the child and runs a million tests on him. This is one of the more dense episode I've reacted to, but I had fun playing detective along with House! Specifically we talk about autism, sedation, sandboxes, eye worms, raccoons, poops, fecal matter, trauma, tumors, infections, lungs, membranes, lymph nodes, biopsies, live cells, cancer, and so much more. Which episode should I react to next?

Today I'm answering some of your questions you've left me in the comments. We talk about sleeping next to wifi routers and cell phones, dating during med school, licking pens, blood, holding in your poops, how late you should stay up at night, VR gaming and motion sickness, indigestion, allergies and intolerances, penicillin, smelling salts, removing scars, sneezing, shaving, STI's, tumors, knee replacements, itchiness, needle phobias, and for some reason a lot of pubic hair.

Over the last several months I have dedicated my time to training for my boxing debut, taking place Saturday May 14th in Tampa, Flordia against my fellow YouTuber, iDubbbz. While my support network has been strong, from friends and family to my professional coaching/nutrition team, I've still received a lot of confused looks and comments from people when I tell them I'm getting ready to fight. Why would a doctor, who knows the real risks that come with boxing, volunteer to participate in such a dangerous sport? Today I want to tell you why I'm driven to the sport and how I'm taking care of myself to limit the very real risks of fighting as much as possible. CTE is real, brain damage is real, lifelong trauma is real. Despite what iDubbbz might have said about me on the H3H3 podcast, I am taking this training seriously, and I think you'll all see what I mean come May 14th ;)

The United States Food and Drug Administration does a great job ensuring everything we put into our bodies is safe, and while that might be true, it may still come as a surprise to learn there are some "interesting" things they allow to slip through. You see, there are all sorts of unsavory things that make their way into our food throughout the crowing, harvesting, and shipping process, that are unfortunately impossible to prevent. Fortunately, the FDA has identified the volume of these things we can allow to slip through the cracks and still not suffer any consequences. We're talking bugs, animal hair, cigarette butts, parasitic cysts! Yuck. Which of these things surprised you the most?

6x37 Truly Painful TikTok Gym Accidents

  • 2022-05-09T00:00:00Z10m

I love going to the gym, getting a good workout, and taking care of my body. I strongly recommend exercise to all of my patients as well. That being said, sometimes things in the gym can get a little... weird. Today we take a look at some of the wildest TikToks that take place in the gym. Specifically we talk about bench press, squat, weird exercises on gym machines, hyper flexibility, racking your weights, warm ups, cool downs, PR's, max sets, clean and jerk, resistance bands, snowboarding, pink eye, dunking, vasoconstriction, dead lifting, sprained ankles, bulking, energy drinks, treadmills, and bears.

I went on the adventure of a lifetime performing Doctor Mike: A-LIVE, my first ever live show! My producer, Sam, and I wrote this show, and then we built out a killer creative team to bring it all to life. We’re so proud of this variety show about medicine and the human body, full of improv, game shows, and furry guests (come on, you know we had to bring Bear)! We visited The Wilbur Theatre in Boston, Capital Turnaround in Washington DC, The Fillmore in Philadelphia, and The Count Basie Center For The Arts in Red Bank, NJ, as the first trial of what this show is and how we like touring life. Believe me, it had so many ups and downs. From the incredible highs of meeting fans during VIP meet and greets and rapping about vaccination on stage, to the brutal lows of Bear and I actually getting kicked off a plane and being forced to drive to DC. This video gives you an exciting look behind the scenes to see what tour life is like and how hard we all worked on pulling this show off. ...

Dr. Paul Offit is the Director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a member of the FDA Vaccine Advisory Committee. He's also the author of Overkill: When Modern Medicine Goes Too Far, one of my favorite books about medicine and the increasingly out of control elements of our healthcare system. I invited Dr. Offit on the channel to discuss a wide range of topics, such as antibiotic use, reducing fevers, Silicon Valley medicine, cancer treatment, Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes, multivitamins, "big pharma", punishing medical influencers who abuse their power and reach, the biological disaster that occurred during the administration of the polio vaccine, boosters, miracle pills, probiotics, the benefits and security of side effects, telemedicine and virtual treatments, and what it really means to be "fully vaccinated" against COVID-19.

TLC continues to produce shows with titles that I am not a big fan of. Previously we reacted to Family By The Ton featuring Casey, a man who overcame being 800 pounds and continues to lose weight now into the 200s. Today we look at the very popular My 600 Pound Life with Dr. Now, specifically the story of Marla McCants, a fast food addict who weighed over 800 pounds. Marla drove to see Dr. Now in Houston and almost didn't survive the journey. Today we look at her medical experiences receiving bariatric surgery, battling blood clots, and finding the will to walk on her journey to actually losing over 600 pounds. I'm so proud of Marla for taking control of her health and improving her quality of life not just for herself, but her children and grandchildren as well. As always, please lead with empathy in the comments and recognize you should never judge a book by its cover or attribute value to a person based on their size. We're all a work in progress, myself included!

In today’s meme review we cover a wide variety of medical subjects such as the healing power of cats, back pain, failed operations, almond milk, corneas in your eyes, UTI’s, Kim Kardashian, selling your organs, neck pain, boxing, sextuplets, IVF, nerves, burning calories, productivity, laziness, alcohol, casts, broken legs, Inglorious Bastards, pregnancy tests, COVID-19 test, eye strain, Shaq, WebMD, kombucha girl, french fries, exercise, garlic, cheese, lumbar, diabetes, Batman, emotional support animals, Peter Davdison, carbs, tendies, tendons, skeletons, x-rays, Apex Legends, fish oil, paracetamol, headaches, cognitive distortions, anxiety, and pap smears. Send me more memes!

I never realized how many medical scenes were in Parks and Rec, but after so many of your recommendations I decided to give it a look! Turns out there was a wide variety of things for us to discuss, such as Ron Swanson getting shot, Ron Swanson getting strep throat, Ron Swanson suffering from a hernia, Leslie Knope getting the flu, Jerry having a fart attack, Andy and April going in for doctor's appointments, MRI's with Will Arnet of Smartless and Arrested Development, Rashida Jones being upset about people putting their mouths over water fountains, Ben Wyatt's kidney stones, and Rob Lowe's food poisoning. Let me know if there are other scenes you want me to react to!

Bondi Rescue is an Australian reality show about the lifeguards who work at Bondi Beach in Sydney. They have a YouTube channel where they upload a ton of their most amazing clips, so I decided to take a look and evaluate their skills from a medical perspective. Today we talk about drowning, CPR, chest compressions, the difference between CPR on land and in the sea, dislocated fingers, dislocated hips, seizures, diabetes, blue bottles or jellyfish stings, scrapes, and all other injuries that can occur when surfing or swimming in the ocean. Are there any clips I missed? Let me know down below!

In May I was lucky enough to be invited to Tampa, Florida to compete in the first ever "Creator Clash", an influencer boxing event designed to raise money for charity. Together with the other fighters we raised over 1.3 million dollars! It was a life-changing experience to not only compete but watch my fellow YouTubers fight as well, such as Michael Reeves, Harley from Epic Meal Time, Graham Stephan, Alex Ernst, Justamix, Hundar, AB from the H3 podcast, Dad and Mat Watson, James from TheOdd1sOut, and so many more. While this event was an incredible success and couldn't possibly be overshadowed by anything, it didn't come without its controversies. Today I want to give you a behind the scenes look at my time in Tampa and everything surrounding my main event fight with Creator Clash creator, iDubbbz. ...

I pride myself on combatting medical misinformation wherever it pops up, and unfortunately, it appears to have popped up in my own videos! That's right, over the course of the 500+ videos on my channel, I've been misinformed or mispoke a number of times. Today, I'm setting the record straight! I discuss popcorn lung and vaping, caffeine in Dayquil, methamphetamine in adderall, sneezing from bright light, OnlyJayus' thoughts on inhaling alcohol to ease nausea, caffeine in 7up and Mountain Dew, Post Traumatic Growth with Gabbi Hanna, cabbage leaves curing mastitis in your breasts, pesticides on produce, trypophobia, the staff of House MD, and my failed knockout of iDubbbz at Creator Clash!

Professor Roy Baumeister wrote the book on willpower... literally! Professor Baumeister is the author of Willpower: Rediscovering The Greatest Human Strength. He's spent his entire career studying self control, where it comes from, how to control it, and how to improve it. "Willpower" is one of my favorite books and today we dove in deep. We talked about the infamous "Marshmallow Experiment" from Stanford University, as well as Roy's own Radish Cookie experiment, which furthered his hypothesis that willpower is actually a finite resource, like gas in a car. I was particularly interested in hearing his thoughts on how to improve our self control and improve our willpower, and turns out there are several things you can do! Be sure to check out Roy's book on Audible like I did and let me know what other books you'd like me to read down below!

I've reacted to Dhar Mann's medical videos before, and they made me cringe. Looks like he's uploaded some new ones since then and I decided to see if the quality had improved at all. Turns out... not so much. Today we talk about bullying children with ASD, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, vitiligo, drinking and driving, breaking your wrist, faking tourette's syndrome, and enduring a coma. Let me know if there are any other videos I may have missed!

Ryan Trahan is currently traveling across the US with the singular goal of delivering a penny to MrBeast. Of course, in classic Ryan fashion, he is only allowing him to travel with funds he's profited from a single penny he started with in Los Angeles. He's about halfway through the biggest challenge in YouTube history, raising money for Feeding America along the way. The highest possible perk for raising money was the opportunity to pick a tattoo for Ryan to get on his body... if you donated $100,000. So... I did. I don't want to be selfish and have all the fun myself though, so I came up with 4 tattoo ideas and YOU get to decide which one will be placed on his body forever. Outside of talking about Ryan Trahan's One Penny Challenge, I also looked at a handful of his other videos to see just how well he's taking care of his body. Please, Ryan, eat your veggies!

TikTok is home to some highly entertaining stunts. While they may be fun to watch, they are often dangerous, with people people their lives in serious jeopardy. You should absolutely never attempt any of these stunts, and today I would like to tell you why. We look at gymnastics and gym fails, neck injuries, water skiing, scooter flips from nitro circus, paintball welts, bodybuilders, bike tricks, baseball accidents, wild pitches, urban exploration, Felix Baumgartner, skateboarding off a bridge, benching the bench, ACL injuries, shoulder dislocations, concussions, field goals, football, flipping off the swing, cliff diving, beard burn, eating ants, ganglion cysts, and Kim Quindlen's personality tests.

Our Little Family is a TLC reality show about the Hamill's, a family of 5 who are all little people. They live with Achondroplasia, the most common type of short-limbed dwarfism. I am joined by one of my best pals, Pamela Rae Schuller, who is not only one of the funniest people I know, but a speaker and disability advocate. Together we look at the medical and social aspects of being a little person, as well as explore what accessibility means and how we can better create a world with universal design. Pam and I both learned a lot watching this show, and I hope you did too!

Live TV is so exciting because anything can happen, and sometimes that means injuries. Today I'm reacting to injuries and medical emergencies that happened on live tv. We're talking America's Got Talent, American Idol, newscasters having strokes, dehydration, Wendy Williams overheating, swallowing swords, being hit with a motorcycle, vasovagal syncope, drowning, Dan Harris, and magical tricks like David Blaine's needle in going wrong. Which clips did I miss? Let me know down below.

I was pretty harsh in my critique of Five Minute Crafts when I took a look at their first-aid hack earlier this year, but since then they’ve put our some new videos with new hacks on how to keep your body in fighting shape. So today I figured I’d see if they’ve improved their medical accuracy or not. We talk about bee stings, bandaids, blisters in your heels, doctor’s visits, getting kids to take medicine, teaching children to wash their hands, headache cures, treatment for heartburn, sleep tips, cleaning your ears, back pain, anxiety, cleaning out your eyes, drinking water, cleaning your pores, and so much more. Which clips did I miss? Let me know down below!

Fear Factor was one of my favorite shows growing up. With Joe Rogan as the host, contestants would compete in a series of horrifying challenges to win money. God bless America. I decided to take a look at the classic show, as well as the revival on MTV hosted by Ludacris, to see whether these challenges were actually dangerous to the contestants health. Turns out they were, and you should never attempt any of these challenges on your own! Today we discuss bull testicals, scorpions, super worms, holding your breath and almost drowning in a swimming challenge, falling off a helicopter, grabbing electric eels, being shocked in an electric chair, getting buried alive, covering yourself in bees, drinking hot sauce, swimming with leeches, walking on glass, and so much more. Are there other scenes you'd like me to react to? Let me know!

Sex Sent Me To The ER is a TLC show where actors re-enact actual medical emergencies that occurred during sex that resulted in an ER visit. It's cringey and incredible. Because the medical issues are so sex-focused, I decided to bring in an expert, Dr. Renal Malik, and Urologist and YouTuber who specializes in sexual health! While the content of this video may be highly sexual and mature in nature, I think it's valuable information and we shouldn't shy away from talking about our sexual health, because it's just as important as everything else. In particular we talk about testicular torsion, penis pearling, getting your genitals stuck in a vacuum, the risk of nitropaste, ovulation, pop rocks in your vagina, calling the fire department to remove a metal ring, popsicle's burning your groin from being too cold, chastity belts, and an unstoppable 3-hour orgasm.

I have spent thousands of hours in hospitals, and over that time I've picked up on some definite do's and don'ts. Because most people (hopefully) might not spend too much time in the hospital, I realized they might not know certain protocols or mistakes that make life hard on hospital staff, and ultimately the patients. Today I run through the definitive cheat-sheet for how to navigate hospital life to get you, the patient, out of their and back on your feet as soon as possible!

Lori Gottlieb is a psychotherapist and the New York Times Best-Selling author of "Maybe You Should Talk To Someone", which I listened to on Audible. I invited Lori on to the YouTube channel to talk all things therapy. Not just our professional thoughts on mental health and therapy as two healthcare providers, but also our own personal experiences with therapy as patients. This was a really enlightening discussion and I hope you stick through to the end to soak up as much as Lori has to offer!

My nephew, Daniel, is off to college! While I'm very proud of how hard he's worked to get here, I can't help but feel I can offer some advice that he might find useful. So, I put on my professor suit and welcomed Daniel to syllabus day at Doctor Mike University, where I give insight into everything I learned during my many years of higher education. We talk about things like textbooks, dorms, roommates, making friends as a freshman, parties, adderall, relationships, majors, student loans, debt, college sports, dunking in basketball, and so much more. Are there any questions you have about college? Or maybe some tips Daniel can use as well? Leave them down below!

6x59 The Worst Medical Takes On Twitter

  • 2022-07-25T00:00:00Z10m

Twitter is full of hot takes, and from time to time things get medical, much to my disappointment. Today I had Sam compile some of the most outrageous and bizarre medical takes from Twitter so I could take a look at them and set the record straight. Unsurprisingly, I get pretty upset talking about things like vaccines, AIDS, miracle cures, pee, inaccurate tattoos, cold showers, Lyme disease, ticks, TikTok trends, anemia, juice, rhinos, vitamin D, sunlight, sunburn, sugar, calories, the CDC, hand washing, hand sanitizer, vegan diets, beans, running, period products, acne, adderall, diabetes, cleaning your blood, dialysis, germs, smoking, muscle gains, HIV, malnutrition, and Elon Musk.

Thanks to BadMedicalTakes on Twitter for pulling so many of these together!

6x60 Draw My Life - Coming To America

  • 2022-07-28T00:00:00Z10m

I was born in Russia in 1989. It was the only world I knew. When I turned 6 my parents told me the next day we would be moving to America and leaving Russia behind forever. I've resisted going into detail about this story because it's so personal to me, but I finally decided to share it so you all can get to know where I come from and what shaped me. What better way to do that with a draw my life/animation video? The journey wasn't easy. Along with navigating the complicated process of immigrating to the United States, I didn't speak a word of English, had to go to a new school, and assimilate to an entirely new culture, all while both of my parents worked nights and weekends to keep food on the table and create a better life for me and my sister. It was hard but I'm grateful they took the leap, as everything I have now is possible thanks to them.

Survivor is coming up on its 43rd season this fall (whaaat??), and with all that reality TV goodness in the can already I knew there would be some medical moments to react to. Turns out, I was right, in that there have been a bunch of ailments on the show over the years! These injuries span the entire length of the whole series, so if you're a long time Survivor and Jeff Probst fan, this one is for you!

Super Size Me is one of the most well-known and successful documentaries of all time. In the early 2000s, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock challenged himself to eat nothing but food from McDonalds for an entire month. He had witnessed the explosion of fast food in America, and with growing numbers about obesity and other weight-related health issues, he wanted to do an experiment and see what would happen to his body if he only ate from the Golden Arches. Despite his doctors stern warnings of the risks involved, he did it anyway, and the results are fascinating. I remember seeing this movie long before I was a doctor, but now that I am a practicing physician, I wanted to watch it again with a fresh perspective. Big Macs, gigantic cokes, mountains of fries, apple pies... you name it, he ate it. I have some strong opinions about the methods used in producing this doc, as well as our current conversations around weight in this country, and I'm sure you do to! Let me know your thoughts down below

I asked my friend, Pam, to join me on the couch and react to medical memes in our 23rd episode! Today we walk about Titanic, Crocs, choking hazards, CPR, surgery, operation, apples, protein, Mississippi, dad jokes, reflexes, Thor, EKG intervals, accessibility, wheelchairs, elevators, E. Coli, ramps, babies, salads, weird ads, antibiotics, Final Destination 2 highway log scene, keto, paleo, fat free, dairy free, low carbs, low fats, and Peloton!

6x64 Doctor Plays Overrated/Underrated

  • 2022-08-11T00:00:00Z10m

I've seen a bunch of great creators playing "Overrated Underrated", so I thought I'd give it a try but with a medical twist. My producer, Sam, compiled a list of medical terms (and some non medical, just for fun) and challenged me to give my hottest takes right off the cuff. I touched on some really juicy subjects, like condoms, bariatric surgery, GOOP, Gwenyth Paltrow, fevers, vitamin d supplements, Doctor Oz, sunscreen, Liver King, electrolytes, the appendix, ice cream, MrBeast, Grey's Anatomy, The Good Doctor, blue light glasses, bitcoin, TikTok, 5-minute crafts, jaw trainers, impossible burgers and beyond meat, step counters, nurses, stretching, Elden Ring, Elon Musk, Dhar Mann, green tea, tesla, keto diets, cold showers, PCOS, and chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions! Where am I wrong? Let me know down below.

Body Bizarre is a show from TLC that once again has a name I don't really appreciate. That being said, the stories covered in this show are fascinating and provide us a valuable glimpse into the lives of people living with conditions that can allow us to appreciate another way of life. Today we look at a woman with PGAD suffering 50-100 orgasms a day, the "Chinese Elephant Man" who's facial tumors have grown to weigh over 50 pounds, a professional cyclist whose undiagnosed condition prevents his body from storing fat, and Claudio Vieira de Oliveira, otherwise known as Brazil's "Upside Down Man". I've never heard of most of these conditions so they served as a great educational opportunity for me as well. I know there are more cases from this show out there, so which ones do you think I should watch?

House MD is one of my favorite shows, and that's why I've reacted to so many episodes on this channel. That being said, the appeal of house isn't just the long and complicated cases he solves, but also the funny and bizarre encounters he has when working in the clinic. I've compiled some of House's strangest patient encounters in this reaction video! Today we talk about inhalers, asthma, old age, dentures, sleep walking, miscarriages, sleep studies, vaccines, birth control, and common colds. Which scenes from the show did I miss?

6x67 The Truth About Your Farts | RTC

  • 2022-08-22T00:00:00Z10m

Lots of great questions here today that I'm excited to answer! We talk about heart beats, tumors, creator clash and iDubbbz, the trolley problem, pens, nipples, mastectomies, scratching a mosquito bite, chewing gum as a study hack, getting 8 hours of sleep, night shifts, Advil vs. aspirin vs. Tylenol, why you like the smell of your own farts, holding your breath, David Blaine, consuming salt, and the risks of smoking.

I have been struggling with a series of injuries over the last several months. I decided to take this treatment into my own hands. I visited a highly-rated acupuncturist in the city who used a new needle technique I've never experienced. This made a huge improvement on the pain I was suffering in my elbow, but I quickly realized a new problem had emerged. There was horrible nerve pain now in my arm. This was very scary as it prevented me from doing several things, and as someone aggressively pursuing a boxing career, I was scared my future was jeopardized. I waited several weeks for the pain to subside, but it never did. So, I looked up a specialist in NYC who could help me. I went online and found a doctor with amazing reviews, a great website, and clips online that gave me a lot of confidence he could help me. So, I booked a quick appointment and went in to get help. This turned out to be the weirdest doctor/patient encounter I've ever experienced. ...

6x69 When Virtual Surgery Goes Wrong...

  • 2022-08-29T00:00:00Z10m

I've played a lot of Surgeon Simulator on this channel, but I've never gone as far as to play Surgeon Simulator: ER (Experience Reality), playable on the Oculus Rift S in Virtual Reality! This was a wild ride. I may not be a surgeon in my practice, but I'm certainly familiar with what the process entails, and this game got it... well dead wrong, but that doesn't mean it wasn't fun. I performed 4 operations on poor Bob: heart transplant, kidney transplant, brain transplant, and eye transplant. Turns out I'm actually pretty good, even if this VR stuff makes my back hurt pretty bad. There's a lot more in this game I didn't even get to, so if there are specific patients or procedures you'd like to see me perform please let me know in the comments!

CORRECTIONS:
*Kennedy was killed in 1963, not 1968. typo that slipped through. Sorry!
*Garfield was not killed IN Baltimore, but rather in DC at a train station CALLED Baltimore. Honest mistake.
*Garfield was shot 4 months into his Presidency, not 18.
*John Quincy Adams died at the age of 80, not 78
*Franklin Pierce died at 64, not 69.

Peyton List is an actor who's appeared in shows like Jessie, Bunk'd, and now in Cobra Kai on Netflix! She and I got together to hang out and play Medical Confessions, where we each come up with two medical "facts" about ourselves. Of course, only one of the "facts" is true. It's up to the other person to suss our which is and isn't sus. Today we talked about herpes, asthma, twisted colons, tuberculosis, motion sickness, rashes, losing your voice, fainting, Doctor Oz, Swine Flu, Emergen-C, and even horns. Leave questions for Peyton down in the comments!

Despite how smooth and polished Dan, Caroline, and Sam make me look on camera with their producing and editing, I promise you I am an awkward weirdo and it was even worse when I was in high school. Oh man was I a dork. Today I pulled together another Draw My Life to tell some of my most cringe and awkward moments from high school in Staten Island that I'm still embarassed about. Getting mono from my first kisses, being jumped walking down the street with my friend Alex, getting cheated on by my first girlfriend, huge fights with my dad... it was rough back then. Hopefully my stories will make your own awkward high school experiences a little easier to swallow. We all go through it as teenagers, I'm certainly no exception. Let me know your worst high school stories down below and we can all heal together!

MrWhoseTheBoss is an awesome tech YouTuber, and he leaned into his tech-side over the course of a 100-day body transformation. I thought it would be fun to review his lifestyle changes with the same concentration and respect he uses to reviews new gear. We talk about diet changes, such as reducing calories, adjusting caffeine intake, tossing our candy/snacks for more whole fruits and vegetables, and so much more. We also talked about his exercise changes, such as running, walking at night, and a major uptick in weight lifting. There were a bunch of other pieces of wellness gear and lifestyle changes, like shock belts, meditation, and various apps on his phone. As I always tell my patient, long-term, consistent lifestyle changes are the keys to success!

I reacted to Family Guy medical scenes a couple of years ago and you all seemed to enjoy it, so today I decided to react to some more! Today we talk about dog bites, breaking your neck by doing stunts designed for professionals, Stewie's plastic surgery and whether we should give botox to babies, suppositories, liver damage from drinking alcohol, cancer, giving doctor's tips, Stewie taking steroids, and Peter fighting the Chicken!

You all loved my first Shark Tank medical review, so here I am with episode 2. Today we look at a couple massive Shark Tank hits, as well as some not-so-successful scams. Squatty Potty, Boost Oxygen, Breathomeeter, Face Yoga, and the TaTa Towel all get a full review from "Mike Var-shark-ski". Which of these items would you use? Let me know down below if there are any products you think I should review next!

Roxy is a very important member of my family, and she just had to go through a very difficult experience. Because of a sarcoma (cancer) in her front right paw, and some questionable decision-making by the veterinary team, Roxy has lost her leg. She's an older dog and has been a member of our family for 12 years, so caring for her health can be tricky. I wanted to share this story not to give some love to my sweet girl, but also arm you with knowledge you can use to prevent the same fate from happening to your pup!

I've received so many comments asking me to react to more Simpsons medical scenes, so here we are! Today we look at Homer's plastic surgery and gastric bypass, Homer pinning his skin back from that famous meme, Homer and Bart jumping the Springfield Gorge, Bart injuring his coccyx on a bowling ball, Homer performing CPR on Moe, looking at an eclipse, Grandpa Abe's exploding kidney's and homer providing a transplant, organ transplants on your driver's license, and so much more. Are there any other scenes from The Simpsons you want me to react to? Let me know down below!

Kal Penn has one of the strangest resumes in Hollywood. You most likely remember Kal as half of the stoner comedy duo “Harold and Kumar”, or if you’ve watched a lot of medical dramas like I have you may have enjoyed his 2 season arc on House MD where he lit a patient on fire instead of doing chest compressions. But if your name is “Barack Obama” (hey Prez, check your DMs, come on the show?) you may instead remember Kal as a full time staff member at the White House. Huh? President Obama hired the White Castle guy, after he was already famous? That’s right. Your tax dollars paid his salary for years as a full time staff member of the White House Office of Public Engagement. Turns out the roller coaster ride of Kal’s life didn’t end with him sitting at the movie premiere for Van Wilder, next to his strict Indian immigrant parents, watching his oiled body slide off a naked woman while playing a character literally named “Taj Mahal” (yikes). ...

6x80 TikToks To Never Show Your Doctor

  • 2022-10-03T00:00:00Z10m

TikTok not only has bad advice about medical cures and treatments, but advertisements for some useless and misleading devices. Today I look at some dangerous and murky claims made about health and medicine on TikTok, including chiropractors, kneecaps, brain exercises, gym form on weight machines, fingernails, stem cells, neck stretchers, the spins from drinking, male birth control, sperm cells, prescription drugs for mental health, plastic surgery, bears, chest compressions, ear lobes, Rob McElhenney's body transformation, kegels, prosthetic legs, running on all fours, spicy food, raw vegan diet, eye tattoos, ab exercises, FDA approvals, foot fungus, freckle tattoos, and OnlyJayus spoon claims.

Body Bizarre is a TLC show highlighting unusual diseases people live with around the world. Today we look at a man whose body has ballooned in size because of a deep sea diving accident, a man who will die if he doesn't drink gallons of water a day, a woman with a highly-dangerous skin pigmentation issue, gigantism affecting the fertility of a Brazilian couple, and a young Chinese boy whose body always feels hungry no matter how much he's eaten. As always, these conditions are real, so let's lead with empathy and understanding in the comment section.

Back by popular demand, another South Park medical scene reaction! Today I'm talking about Kenny being lit on fire and George Clooney trying to save him from South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, Cartman's anal probe, gluten allergies, celiac disease, food pyramids, fecal transplants, adderall, ritalin, ADHD, ADD, Butters getting a ninja star in his eye, Randy getting served, Kyle's hemorrhoid, and lice. Let me know down below if there are any other clips I should react to!

During this clip from my full interview with Steve-O on my new podcast "The Check Up with Doctor Mike", the legendary Stephen Glover from Jackass shares the details of his most painful injury from his decades-long career, the third degree burns he got from a stunt doing "snow angels" in jet fuel. He also hits on his biggest regret, which is the years he went not flossing, and how it's harmed his gums later in life.

Steve-O is an icon. Everyone knows him as one of the faces of Jackass, but what most people don't know is that Steve-O is more than just a stunt man known for falling down stairs in a bellhop cart or lighting himself on fire. In this two-hour interview, I feel like I really spoke to the actual human being, Stephen Glover, and not the extreme stunt-man from MTV. We dove into the obvious stuff I know you want to hear, such as old Jackass stories, his most painful injuries, and how his body is holding up. Beyond that though, we dove into some really deep subjects, such as his struggles with growing up as a "rich kid", Buddhism, and the profound lessons he's learned through a multi-decade life of getting paid to injure yourself. Steve-O is addicted to attention, and I was glad to give him some! #podcast

6x86 Grooming My Giant Dog In NYC

  • 2022-10-20T00:00:00Z10m

Bear is my Newfoundland that lives with me in my apartment in NYC. While his size and amount of floof might be adorable and lovable, it makes keeping him clean and hygenic a very difficult process. Every few weeks I sit down with Bear and spend hours making sure he's well groomed, from bathing, to shampoo, to soap, then brushing his teeth, trimming his nails, trimming his fur, and the exhaustive process of drying him out. I wanted to share this bathroom ritual with all of you so you could see just how challenging it is to groom my floofy in NYC, but also teach you some helpful tips about caring for your pets should you find yourself with a dog to groom someday.

My pro boxing debut is next week against Chris Avila. This is a big step up for me after my exhbiition fight against iDubbbz at Creator Clash in Tampa last May. I've been training like crazy to come down over 20 pounds to fight Chris, so today I thought I would tell you how I did it in a safe and responsible way. It's such an honor to share a card with Jake Paul, Anderson Silva, LeVeon Bell, Ashton Sylve, Braulio Rodriguez, Alexandro Santiago, Antonio Nieves and Uriah Hall. Wish me luck!

You all loved when I reacted to medical stand up comedy with my friend, Dr. Lou Espina, so I thought I'd try it again, this time with a stand up comedy expert, Pamela Rae Schuller! We laugh along with Taylor Tomlinson discussing her bipolar diagnosis, Tom Segura's doctor questioning his sexuality, Brian Reagan's dermatologist, Ryan Neimiller's nasty trick on kids from America's Got Talent, Sam Comroe's summer camp for kids with Tourette's Syndrome, Mike Birbiglia's sleepwalking incident, Hasan Minhaj's infertility, and Nicole Byer's pain medications. Which comedian was your favorite?

You sent in some really great questions in this new responding to comments video! Today we discussed how clothes can affect your health, compression gear, weight lifting gloves, ties, chaffing nipples, lifting weights in Converse Chuck Taylor's, sleeping while falling asleep to something, litter boxes, liver regeneration, posture correctors, the cool side of the pillow, memory foam mattresses, the heart, the brain, underwear, essential oils, Russian food, chess, kidney stones, hot tubs, nurses, dark necks, sunscreen, social media doctors, therapy alternatives, and medical gifts! Leave more questions down below.

There are so many options when shopping for food at the grocery store, so I wanted to show you how I, as a doctor, mike the right decisions for my health when walking down the aisles. Today we talk about tomatoes, green beans, turkey, honey, sweeteners, greek yogurt, berries, popcorn, leafy greens, spinach, kale, cheese, and so much more all within a cool new Amazon Fresh location!

Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, is one of the most prolific YouTubers on the platform. Boasting over 16 million subscribers, Marques prides himself on having the most cutting edge and high-quality tech videos on the internet. How does Marques make his iPhone reviews stand out from the competition? Try by investing in a $250,000 robotic camera to give his videos a look nobody can match, for starters. When Marques isn't producing tech content out of his studio in New Jersey, he actually plays professional frisbee. I not only asked him about his thoughts on all things tech (wearables, crypto, his own line of products, etc.) but his personal life as well. I wanted to "unbox" Marques myself to see what makes him tick. #podcast

6x93 Doctor Fact-Checks American Dad

  • 2022-11-14T01:00:00Z10m

Professor Matthew Walker is a Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is also the founder and director of the Center for Human Sleep Science. If you've got sleep questions, he's your guy. In this clip from my full length interview with him (links below), we talked about chronotypes, or the category of sleeper you may fall into. It turns out, whether you're an early riser or a night owl might not actually be your "fault", and in fact it may have been something you were born with. Let me know if you have any more questions about sleep below!

Nascar, Indycar, F1... all very exciting sports, but also unfortunately come with risk of injury during a crash. Today I've compiled a bunch of infamous crashes where miraculously drivers survived. We talk about the accidents, the injuries, the recoveries, and how these racing organizations have changed the rules and improved vehicles to keep drivers' and spectators' health and safety at the track! Specifically I look at crashes involving Romain Grosjean, Robert Wickens, Ryan Newman, Rusty Wallace, Mike Conway, Geoff Bodine, Eddie Irvine, Fernando Alonso, and Lee Petty. Let me know down below if there are more crashes you think I missed!

TLC's My Strange Addiction is a complicated show. While I don't like the title or some of the campy ways they portray serious conditions people are dealing with, I do think we can use this as an opportunity to educate about the struggles of real life people, as well as develop empathy for people dealing with addictions we might not quite understand at first. Specifically we look at a girl addicted to collecting cockroaches, twins addicted to being as similar to each other as possible, a woman addicted to neck rings, another woman addicted to tanning booths, a college student addicted to loving inflatable animals, and a man addicted to plastic surgery and trying to look like a real life Ken Doll. Let me know down below if there are more clips you want me to look into!

Don't forget to leave a 5 star review with a medical question in the body of it and I'll try to answer it in a future episode!

Here are five of the most incredible survival stories I've come across during my career in medicine. Phineas Gage survived a tampering iron that passed through his head. Aron Ralston survived having removed his own arm to escape a bouldering that trapped him in a canyon. Julianne Koepcke survived after she fell out of an airplane and crashed into the Amazon jungle. Michael Cassidy survived an accident on his motorcycle thanks to groundbreaking balloon technology. Loenid Rogozov survived after he performed an appendectomy on himself. Let me know down below if there are more stories of survival I should take a look at!

I lost my pro boxing debut against Chris Avila. Those are difficult words to write, but an even more difficult thing to actually experience. It was my first fight since defeting iDubbbz in the first Creator Clash last May, and this time it was an official pro fight. My hat goes off to Chris and his team for the preparation and performance during our bout, and I've had to do a lot of internal soul searching to identify where I fell short. That search has yielded some takeaways for me though, and I'm not ready to throw in the towel on my boxing career just yet. I wanted to share the entire boxing experience from traveling to Arizona at the Gila River Arena thanks to an invite from Jake Paul and Most Valuable Promotions. Getting to see Jake take on Anderson Silva was cool, as well as Uriah Hall vs. Leveon Bell, Ashton Sylve vs. Braulia Rodriguez, and everyone else who had the privilege of competing. ...

A new episode of Curbside Consult, where I headed to Central Park to answer real medical questions from real people! We talked about male birth control, the stages of male puberty, sprained ankles, vegetarianism, thanking your nurses, psychology, advice for family medicine residents, creatine, oatmeal, crunches, and the heart rate of Big Foot. Duh. Let me know where I should come to answer questions next!

It can be difficult to get good, consistent sleep, but as a physician it's one of the things I recommend most strongly to my patients. Getting a good night's sleep every night can provide significant improvements to your health, so today I wanted to go out of my way and give you the inside scoop on some things you can do that should help you get that sweet shut eye. Eating before bed, avoiding spicy foods, cooling down your room, limiting blue light exposure before bed, doing things in bed beside sleeping, acknowledging your sleep chronotype, avoiding caffeine before bed in all its forms, naps, using night shift mode, increasing light exposure early, having a good mattress, keeping pets out of the bed, using blackout curtains, limiting phone alerts, avoid cold air, avoid hot socks, effective exercise, and deciding when to actually get out of bed.

Andrew Rea is THE number one man in the world of YouTube food, but you probably know him better as the face, the voice, the hands, and the mind behind the Babish Culinary Universe. When I decided I wanted to sit down and pick out some healthier menu items from Taco Bell, I knew there was only one guy to go to for helping my suss out the culinary aspect of the food. Yes, I can talk the nutrition, but I needed Andrew to discuss how it was prepared and the quality of the ingredients. I looked at a handful of Taco Bell menu items: black beans, chicken soft taco, crunchwrap supreme, veggie power bowl, bean burrito... maybe some other surprises as well. Let me know down below if you think there were some menu items I missed!

5 Minute Crafts has video promoting a wide variety of first aid treatments and cures for mild medical ailments such as headaches and sores. Usually... often... almost exclusively, these "hacks" are useless and occasionally even present a risk to patients. Let me now down below if there are more "crafts" I need to fact check!

Be very careful when you're fed an ad on TikTok for a new medical device, but often times they can either be meaningless wastes of money or pose a legitimate risk to your health! It's also scary on TikTok because it's not obvious when videos are ads here. That TikTok featuring a "real" person in their bedroom talking about how great a product is for their medical condition might not be "real" at all, but a careful crafted advertisement designed to trick you into thinking these products work. Today we talk about EMF shields, double chin sucking devices, alkaline water machines, ear cleaners, posture correctors, mastic chewing gum, coffee enemas, ionic foot detox, and more! Let me know down below if there are more products you've seen that you'd like me to review.

Dane Cook is one of the most prolific stand up comedians of all time. At one point in 2005 he performed a tour in 80 arenas for audiences of over 20,000 every single night. He's a household name in the world of comedy, and despite some dramatic turns in his life, he hasn't slowed down. He's so committed to his craft of stand up comedy that he just shot his most recently special from the front yard of his house in the Hollywood Hills. Today we talk about his health, how he's never touched an alcoholic beverage in his life yet attended many AA meetings, his exercise routine, and the countless ways in which he's overcome adversity to continue speaking his truth.

After I interviewed Sebastian Maniscalco on my podcast, I challenged him to a game of Medical Heads Up to raise money for the Tag You're It foundation, which seeks to assist US Veterans, those battling Alzheimer's Disease, and children's education. This wound up being hilarious, as we both had to take turns miming and guessing terms like sphincter, navel, kidney stone, CDC, bloody nose, pituitary gland, colostomy bag, and dozens more. Please leave suggestions below for guests you'd like to see me have on the channel!

Sebastian Maniscalco is a world-class stand up comedian who has sold out some of the biggest and most historic venues in the world. He just released a new special on Netflix called "Is It Me?" which nearly knocked me on the floor I thought it was so funny. I invited Sebastian onto the pod to discuss his sciatic pain shooting down his leg. He's been on the road for 19 months and the pain is apparently getting bad, so we dove in deep to discuss it's cause and potential treatments. We also discussed fatherhood, how he felt being on Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld, the rise of illness in our kids' schools, and toxic masculinity.
